What’s on my hard drive?

Hello,
On a hard dive capacity of 57GB I;m down to 14% free space. CCleaner shows the largest usage is “Other Files” at 46GB. I’m a modest user of space and this doesn’t make sense. I’ve printed below the first lines from the biggest file – 3.7GB in size. I would be most grateful to find out What, Why and especially can they be safely deleted.

Pagefil.sys and Hiberfil.sys are system files. If you do NOT use hibernation, the former can be deleted. If you have >8GB of RAM, pagefil.sys can also be removed or reduced in Windows Advanced Settings. The next several files, in System Information, appear to be your System Restore points – ?do you need to save this many of them?? ?How about deleting all but the latest, using the System Restore dialog or a 3rd party program?
For a better idea of where your space has gone to, try using Scanner.exe http://steffengerlach.de/freeware/ or DiskSpace Fan4 Free http://www.diskspacefan.com/ (both take a similar radial approach), or Space Sniffer http://www.uderzo.it/main_products/space_sniffer/index.html or WinDirStat http://windirstat.info/download.html for a more rectilinear view.

Thanks Zig, I do need pagefil and hiberfil but deleting restore points got rid of 16 Gb of files. I’ll try one of the suggested programs too.
Thanks also to Paul T – we’re sure a long way from my first laptop of 200Mb hard drive and 4 Mb RAM

That is the amount of free space I would expect on a 60GB disk. I used to run a 60GB disk for Windows and 10% free was the norm.
I now run a 128GB disk (SSD).
