Just did a clean install of Win XP on a new machine. So far mostly good, I’ve still got mucho software to install. I only encountered one error message during install: HKEY_DYN_DATACONFIG MANAGERENUM CAN’T BE FOUND What does this mean? Yea, I’m a greenhorn.

Also, when I install software, long after the install has been completed, the machine keeps spinning away on the CD. It’s done it on every CD so far and I don’t know if I need to keep waiting for it to stop, which has been as long as a half hour, or eject it like I’ve done with a couple? Any ideas?

      1. You’ve tried to install software designed for Windows 95/98. Setup is looking for specific Registry key, that is not present in Windows XP (Windows XP is NT-based). It is strongly recommended to check is your software compatible with Windows XP before installation.

      2. Windows keeps your CD spinning to allow you fast access your CD contents. Don’t pay attention on it. If you want to eject your CD, just press the button.

That registry error isn’t indicative of being a greenhorn, smile it’s an ugly error message. In a nutshell, it means that the software was looking for something in the registry that it could not find, but without knowing what that software was, I can’t tell you more about the error itself. What was the software package?

If you have a Creative sound card or CD-ROM, there is a service that is installed along with it (as Kaplinb indicated) that keeps the CD spinning. You should see an entry in the Control Panel for it, and the spin-time is adjustable – personally, I disable the service and just don’t use it, because I don’t feel that it offers any benefits over what Windows already does.

Thanks guys for sharing your wisdom. I’m sure happy to here the CD issue isn’t a problem, I’ll check the control panel when I fire that hummer back up.

Most likely the registry error has to do with my old IBM keyboard, its just so much better than the new keyboard. As soon as I get my new machine online I’ll go to IBM and see if they have a new WIN XP compatible driver for it. cheers
