Google Calendar Sync was a free tool provided by Google to synchronize the calendar in Microsoft Outlook to Google Calendar. It will see no further development, and it will not be available for download for new installations by Google. Existing users prior to December 14th, 2012 will be able to continue to use the product “as is” (however this may mean it will no longer work with future versions of Outlook).

Google says this is because they stopped supporting Microsoft’s Exchange Active Sync technology. They want Microsoft to start supporting the CalDAV standard in Outlook (like for example Apple already does in their calendar apps). Microsoft has not yet spoken about whether they will or will not provide CalDAV support: they simply recommended people to start using Outlook.com (which is not a true solution to the issue).

This means that people who did not install Google Calendar Sync before 12/14/12 can no longer synchronize Outlook’s calendar to for example their Android or iOS devices, or to the online Google Calendar. This potentially affects millions of Outlook users worldwide.

Do you know of alternative solutions (e.g. 3rd party plug-ins for Outlook to sync to Google Calendar), or workarounds?

I’ve used gSyncit, costs $20, but gives a lot more features than Google Sync ever had (contacts, tasks, calendars etc). Updated to support Outlook 2013 and Win8.

Why would you want Google to know your daily itinerary? Do you really trust them?

Companion Link will synchronize everything including Journal.

Hmmmm, depends. Possible not if I’m scheduling my nightly recurrence of my world domination plans…

Gee, Brain, what do you want to do tonight?

We “upgraded” to Office 2010 at work recently.

I’d been using google calendar sync to keep my calendars sync’ed on outlook with my android phone (I hate using the work blackberry! – and it’s easier to use the one phone).

I’ve just discovered that it doesn’t appear to be sync’ing any more. I hope that Microsoft and Google will come to an agreement.

Without all the details of your set-up, it’s hard to say what might be best. Easiest might be to sync outlook to your device (if you have appropriate permissions), then let the device sync with Google calendar. I use Kies on my Samsung. A bit buggy, but gets the job done. There are a number of apps for syncing to your device, some free some paid, some specific to particular manufacturers, and so on. I sync via usb cable, and can then set up sync to google calendar from the phone. I haven’t really needed google calendar since I have contacts, calendar, etc. in my pocket wherever I go, so haven’t synced to the google cloud on a while.

I used Google Sync before. It was never reliable. Plus I really don’t trust giving Google yet more of my info. I will never put my contacts into Google.

I now use Exchange Server – which does an excellent job syncing to our phones. Calendars and contacts are automatically updated in seconds after I make changes either in Outlook or with Exchange’s web tool.

Prior to Exchange, I used a free product, “My Phone Explorer”. This tool accurately syncs calendar, contacts, notes, whatever. Plus you can access files on your phone. I found it easy to use and fast to get everything synchronized. You just install a small application on both your phone and on your workstation. http://www.fjsoft.at/en/
