• What to do – lost smart phone

What should you do if your smart phone gets lost at a hospital.

According the hospital’s security team, it happens a fair amount. Phones get caught in the linens and, when the linen company finds them, they send the phones back to the hospital.

In the meantime, what steps should be taken to protect the owner of the lost smart phone?

If it’s a iPhone, it can be locked or wiped remotely.

      How?

Log to ‘find my‘ on any PC/Mac.

“The Find My app makes it easy to keep track of your Apple devices — even if they’re offline.”

You sign in, locate your iPhone, and then can lock and/or wipe it.

A flaw with this is, if the battery level is too low to power the iPhone, not much can be done.
So time is a pressing factor here.

Android phones can be locked and wiped remotely as well.

Also, I use Bitdefender and it has “Find/Lock/Wipe/Scream” options.

If they are corporate phones and are hooked into Intune you can remote wipe as well without accessing the personal iphone or android accounts.

I left my phone in a shopping cart one time and lost it. Never again. I went proactive and got the Prox PRD phone reminder device.  Place device on key ring. Connects to phone via bluetooth. No GPS tracking concerns. Will alert if phone separates from key device. The distance can be adjusted. Very affective.

Would it lock later, IE when the lost or stolen phone is charged up?

Good question.  I’ve never had to lock a lost phone, but finding a phone with a dead battery, then charging it and powering it on would be common.  The mobile Bitdefender app has a strong “Anti-theft” package and a lot of features.

Safe bet it would lock/wipe as soon as it powered up and connected to the internet, but a determined attacker would fire it up in a faraday cage so they could work on it unhindered.

The real question is whether they want the phone to sell or just your data. Either way, encrypt your phone and have a decent unlock code.

        cheers, Paul
