Fired up my Win 10 Home 22H2 this morning and all of a sudden it acted like it was installing an update.  When it completed most of my application were trashed and it came up as administrator acct with no password.  FireFox browser’s cookies and bookmarks were gone and Edge made the default browser,  the default email was changed to MS Mail from Eudora, the desktop was scrambled and many icons were missing.  Several application acted like they were just installed and all options were reset to default and I was asked to “re-register them.  It also wants me to open an MS account in order to have a non-admin login.

Took me most of the day to get things almost back to 99% normal. What is odd is that no update for this date (4/1/2024) is listed.

Any ides as to what happened?

Not a happy camper with MS

Possibly a corrupt user profile, or malware…

Have you had other issues with this system before today?

Are you imaging your hard drive on a frequent basis?

When this occurs more often than not there is security software and/or lagging on the system which holds certain files locked while the initial booting occurs which then throws you into a temp profile.

What antivirus is installed?  RAM?  Hard drive?

It’s the profile that’s not  happy.

A restore from image backup would have taken a couple of minutes.

Sounds like a corrupt user profile. I know of someone who encountered this – Windows was running on a temporary profile which deleted itself on logoff. Not realising this, he moved his profile data to the new folder and lost it the next time he logged off!

      Problem fix by magic?

Turned on PC this morning and I was given a choice between “Administrator” and my original account. Selected my original account and everything is back where it should be and working fine.  Probably was a profile issue.

Thanks for the all responses guys!

If it happens again, try rebooting and see if it comes back okay.
