What Mac OS X can I run on my iMac (2007)

Recently, my son gave me his older iMac 6.1 (purchased in 2007) It has Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2.16 Ghz, 4 Gb Memory, bus speed 667 Mhz and 1 Tb Hard Drive. The serial # is W864437AVGN. Boot ROM version is IM61.0093.807

I reloaded, from supplied OS X disks, the Tiger (10.4.11) operating system.

My first question: Can I load any of the other OS X Versions, namely, Mountain Lion and Mavericks??

I was able to load OS X Snow Leopard (1.6). Next is Mavericks (1.9)

After Snow Leopard 10.6 came Lion 10.7 then Mountain Lion 10.8 and latest is Mavericks 10.9. There is a Yosemite coming. Mavericks may be questionable on a 2007 Mac, hardware issues, didn’t work for a lady on her MacBook.

I read that my iMac need to be at iMac ID level 7.1 or higher, in addition to snow Leopard (1.6.8) or higher. Is there a BIOS or Firmware upgrade to change to iMac ID 7.1 or higher?

A Mac report said that I have the latest level Firmware (IM61.0093.807). Am I at a dead end??

It’s more about when it was built, no way to know how long it was on a shelf before he got it.

Mountain Lion may the the latest you can use.

On a 6,1 iMac (a.k.a. “late 2006”), Lion is the highest officially-supported OS.

Another question. I could not find the apple diagnostic tools on the computer or on the snow leopard disks.

I heard of a diagnostics tool called TechTools Pro Version 7 – Cost $99.99. Any comments?

You have to boot the Mac from the SL installer disk; the installer itself will put up a “Utilities” menu item.

I am sorry I missed your message before I purchased OS X Lion. I successfully installed OS X Lion (10.7.5) I do not have a disk or install file after Lion was installed. How do I make a Install/recover DVD?
