Just wondering what the maximum number of rows is in Open Office Calc 3.2 – can I replace MS Office Prof 2007 and handle the same number of rows?

Calc 3.2 only supports 65,536 rows in its windows version. The Ubuntu version supports one million rows, like Excel 2007.

I’d be real interested in hearing from anyone out there who is using more that 65K rows in a single sheet.
What I’d like to know is:
      How many Rows
      How many Cols per row
How much memory do you have in the machine
      What processor are you using
How large is the file on disk.

Finally….How many years does it take to calculate

Seriously, I would really be interested if anyone could provide this information.

I just created a sample file with the formula =RAND() in cells A1:A1000000. It took about 7 seconds to calculate. I then transformed the formulas into fixed values, then sorted the million cells, another 6 seconds. I filled in cells B1:L1000000 with the text “qwe”, then saved the file: 11 MB but the uncompressed content is 300 MB. It took a minute to save or re-open. I have 3 GB and an Intel Dual Core T3400.

I quite often get sent data files with hundreds of thousands of rows. Of course, the first thing I do is stick them into a database where they belong! 🙂

      Rory,

absolutely right – then again, some databases need to be worked on with respect to deduping records or merging two sets of records. One of the programs we use for this purpose requires the import of these records as xls files.
