I am about to get an old Win 7 computer. I am planning on using it as a gaming computer (old games of course ; ) ) and totally offline. However I wanted to get notepad++ installed before it goes offline permenantly. That or just downloading it and transfer the installer to Win 7 with a stick.

Anyway, I want to know what is the best notepad++ version for me to install? It was awhile for me since I last use notepad++, so I don’t know if it has unsavory additions to it the way ccleaner had been. I don’t want it to harm the computer in any way.

Would the portable be best? If so, how different it is from installed version? Is the website of notepad++ dot org still the best place to get it?

Thank you forany help you could give 🙂

Portable apps function the same as installed apps (I use mostly portable apps. Doesn’t contaminate the OS).

Thank you for your reply 🙂 That was helpful.

As for portable version, I could just use it to open some of files of my games same as installed verison right?

Only other question I have left, is there any untoward addition to any version of notepad++ like with ccleaner or is it all clean?

        Have a great day! 😀

I use the portable version (currently 8.7.7).
          Software is clean.

I’ve used the portable and mini-portable versions in place of MS notepad for years without issue for Win7, Win8.1, 10 and now W11.

      I prefer the mini-portable version for Win7 😉

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

Count me as another long-time user of the Notepad++ portable version. I use portable versions for everything when they’re available — including browsers. (The only browsers “installed” are what came with Windows, but I never use them. I only use portable browsers.) A side benefit is this also makes imaging/restoring the OS so much simpler and less frequent, since many of the apps I use are kept separate from the OS.

I use mostly portable apps. Doesn’t contaminate the OS.

I like that characterization. That’s precisely why I’ve long preferred using portable apps whenever possible, but I never summarized it as well.
