Hi Lonnie,

mobsync.exe
Microsoft Mobile Synchronization Manager. One annoying programme you will find running in W2K/XP is mobsync.exe. This is because it is set by default to synchronise your home page at log-on. To stop this, run the programme “Synchronise” from your “Start/Programmes/Accessories Menu. Select setup, and uncheck the synchronisation options, then deselect the option to synchronise your home page. From explorer select Tools/Folder Options/Offline Files: deselect the “Enable Offline Files” option. When you reboot you will find the programme is no longer running by default. You can also remove optional components from your Windows 2000 installation that are not shown in the Add/Remove Programmes applet.

Hope this helps

Regards

John

I read that..it states W2K/XP…but for WinME? This is the only thing it is used for..the homepage?

• #643096

Is it actually doing anything other than sitting in your ..system folder? i.e. – is it running?

• #643100

Don’t ‘see’ it doing anything…as per attachment laugh …was just wondering.

• #644644

I liked the look of Startup List from your attachment, and discovered by Googling that the latest version is 1.5 (26th December 2002), available from (presumably) the author’s web page at http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/%5B/url%5D

It would be nice to know what some of the more opaque programs actually do…!

• #644646

I’m sorry, but I don’t understand what your last sentence means…please explain. Thanks.

• #644707

By “opaque” I meant that I didn’t always know what some of the programs listed in Startup List actually did, because either the directory path of the program name didn’t give me any clues.

I wonder whether anyone has compiled a “List of the Programs Found in Startup List and Their Function”?

Thanks, Mark – unfortunately:
a) this website is blocked by our Proxy Server since it thinks it is in some way naughty, and
it appears to be down at the time of writing!

I will pursue the matter when (presumably) they wake up in the UK. [Thinks – I am in the UK!]

It’s up and working right now, and I think I am only posting a few moments after you.

It still seems unwell to me – I will try it when I get home, for there I am (comparatively) unfettered!

• #644729

Probably references to such files as eusexe.exe. . . . .

You may have better luck going in the front door, but I guess you’d still be blocked from the page you want to see.

• #644732

No, still no good, I’m afraid – what it is to be nannied!

Is the page of startup files Very Large?

About 840Kb.

I checked Answers That Work first and they say:
Microsoft Synchronization Manager. This program, which is part of Internet Explorer 5.x/6, runs in the background when you are using the “View pages offline” feature of Internet Explorer, and you have set parameters for when your pages should be automatically synchronised, or you decide to manually synchronise your offline content with the web through the “Start Programs Accessories Synchronize” function. This program will also run if you are doing development using Microsoft SQL 7 and using SQL 7 replication.

Recommendation :
Harmless. If you never use the “Synchronize” function, then disable it with Startup Manager.
On the other hand, Pacs-Portal has a link to this MS article.

Hi Lonnie

Your attachment lists United Devices software as being installed on your computer. This would indicate that your computer is being used as part of an “online” computer network (eg: SETI).
Just thought I’d point it out in case you weren’t aware of it.

Ok…I knew about UD…have run this Cancer Research for over a year now. I thought you were referring to something else.

• #645320

I guess I will just forget about this…as I have not been given a clear answer to my question. I have WinME only.
This item is just listed where I stated in original post…I don’t ‘see’ it running in the background at all. I don’t use ‘Offline’ at all…have no idea what ‘Synchronization’ means.
This has also steered way off the original query. frown

• #645327

There is doubtless a whole bundle of .exe’s installed on your pc that are not doing anything – they will have been loaded when the OS was installed in case you needed them.

I thought John gave a fairly explanatory answer to your original post. References to W2K and XP only do not mean that it does not also apply to WinME. My interpretation would be that if you normally work with your home page off-line – i.e. you can view it from a stored version kept on your HD – the program would ‘synchronise’ the data you have locally with the source data.

In it’s basic form, the word synchronize means “To work in unison” – e.g. to synchronize watches to set them showing the same time. In this instance, when you logged on, IE or whatever would update your local version of your homepage.

Did you search for Offline / Synchronize etc. in Win ME Help?

If it is not apparently running, I really wouldn’t worry about it!

• #645354

Ok…did the ‘Help & Support’ for Offline/Synchronize…it states everything that I don’t do at all.

So, I guess I will just forget about it.
