There is a coffee cup on my taskbar for a program called “Java” that is constantly searching for updates and asking me to download updates. What is this program and what good does it doe me? Should I ignore these messages or uninstall Java? I wonder if all it does is slow down my system.

Java is a programming language used to create applets on web sites. Java was going to be the universal plugin for sophisticated web applications, but suddenly Flash became very powerful and now Java isn’t that popular any more.

Anyway, not too many sites use Java, but you must have visited one that does. It is important to update the Java Runtime Engine (which also updates the browser plugin) from time to time.

You can get some control over the Java updating process by going to ….
      Start>Control Panel>Java>Update tab

I have mine set to “check” for updates once a month and notify me Before Downloading.
