Why I love Linux
When I first discovered pc’s, I was blow away with their possibilities. I couldn’t afford to buy an IBM XT, so by buying one piece at a time with each paycheck, I assembled an IBM XT clone. Then, when the internet came into being, for me, the world changed. I ended up making my living in the field of IT until my retirement.
After Windows 7, when Microsoft released Windows 8, I fell out of love with Microsoft and started to look at other operating systems. I really liked Linux, but found too many hardware issues. Microsoft released Windows 10, but until the latest release, it still offered little over Windows 7. Then came Windows 11. To me, it offers nothing but bugs and regressions, with less functionality. It was time to look at Linux again.
Linux has come a long way. For the most part but not completely, hardware comparability issues are a thing of the past. Much innovation, new ideas, and excitement at the possibilities it provides. Linus and open source software are the future in personal computing. Windows and Microsoft may be what the workplace is locked into, but if I was a small business owner, Linux and open source would be what I would go with. As a personal computer user, who is not locked into Microsoft, Linux is the only way to go.
Notwithstanding the above, I have not talked about Apple and their OS. Apple may offer fine products in both hardware and their OS, but I wouldn’t want to be locked into their ecosystem. I want the freedom to pick my OS and software, and Linux and open source software provides that.
I find that with Linux, the things that first attracted me to personal computing, are back. Please free free to disagree.
