    Why I love Linux

When I first discovered pc’s, I was blow away with their possibilities. I couldn’t afford to buy an IBM XT, so by buying one piece at a time with each paycheck, I assembled an IBM XT clone. Then, when the internet came into being, for me, the world changed. I ended up making my living in the field of IT until my retirement.

After Windows 7, when Microsoft released Windows 8, I fell out of love with Microsoft and started to look at other operating systems. I really liked Linux, but found too many hardware issues. Microsoft released Windows 10, but until the latest release, it still offered little over Windows 7. Then came Windows 11. To me, it offers nothing but bugs and regressions, with less functionality. It was time to look at Linux again.

Linux has come a long way. For the most part but not completely, hardware comparability issues are a thing of the past. Much innovation, new ideas, and excitement at the possibilities it provides. Linus and open source software are the future in personal computing. Windows and Microsoft may be what the workplace is locked into, but if I was a small business owner, Linux and open source would be what I would go with. As a personal computer user, who is not locked into Microsoft, Linux is the only way to go.

Notwithstanding the above, I have not talked about Apple and their OS. Apple may offer fine products in both hardware and their OS, but I wouldn’t want to be locked into their ecosystem. I want the freedom to pick my OS and software, and Linux and open source software provides that.

I find that with Linux, the things that first attracted me to personal computing, are back. Please free free to disagree.

I’d rather agree. Although I’m more at home with Win 7, I’ve been using and learning Linux Mint now for about three years. As a home user I’ve come to like the convenience of Linux Mint and am at last free of the headaches of MS updates.

Being 20 something in the 70's was far more fun than being 70 something in the insane 20's

“comparability issues are a thing of the past”, should read “compatibility issues”…

      Still can’t spell!

Sure you can! That was merely the “evil Autocorrect Gremlin”. 🙂

Using Linux to me is freedom of the internet alongside less OS restrictions, firey hoops to jump through and ridiculous frameworks of forced cloud rubbish to store on someone elses system. Not my idea of security at all!
Yes, cloud stuff is available if you want it, although more importantly,
it’s an unforced option with Linux.
Given that Linux devs are the quickest to implement security over other systems:

The best performers in terms of patching within the deadline were Linux, Mozilla, and Google, while the worst were Oracle, Microsoft, and Samsung.

is it any wonder why I love Linux too 🙂

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...
