• What happened to TB on Linux Mint?

I’ve been using Thunderbird for Linux for about the past year and a bit.  Everything worked perfectly for months.  Recently, I can not send any message from any of my 3 Linux boxes. I am using a Yahoo! email address.  Nothing has changed on Yahoo’s side that I can tell. Any thoughts?

We need a bit more than “can not send”.
      Error messages from TB?
      Can you send from webmail?
Have you changed router / ISP?
      POP or IMAP?
Have you checked the SMTP settings?

      cheers, Paul

Have you generated an “App password” for Thunderbird?
You use your regular password when you log into the website. But you need an App Password to use in the password (instead of your regular password) input box in Thunderbird. You have to generate the App Password on the website under Manage your info, and a “Security” link at the top. The setup in T-Bird is for both Incoming and Outgoing servers.

First I use the Yahoo Mail app on my phone and tablet. No issues there.

I just recently had issues sending (smtp) with TB. I haven’t changed any settings.

I can receive emails without issues.

PK, I’ve heard about the “App Password”. This would be for the smtp (outgoing) server? I noticed the smtp settings has a username (email address) but can’t seem to find where to put the “App Password”? Would I need an ” App Password” for each Linux machine or can I reuse it?

The setup in T-Bird is for both Incoming and Outgoing servers.

Search for it on Yahoo mail.

The App password goes in the password box when you set up T-Bird, instead of your regular password you use when you log in on the Yahoo Mail website. Write down BOTH your regular password and the App Password.

Hi PK thanks for the info.

I was able to create an “App Password” but I am having trouble adding it to Thunderbird.  Do I need to delete my email account and create a new one?  I am using IMAP if that helps.

            Edit @10:55pm EST

I found where the passwords are saved.  Unfortunately I made a mistake and deleted the entry for the smtp password.  I didn’t realize it could be edited! Now I can’t figure out how to add it back!

            Argh!!

              Deleted the password or settings?

Settings for your account are here: https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN4075.html

Settings -> link at bottom Account Settings -> Outgoing Server (SMTP)

Should be the same as the incoming server (for the same email address) at the top of the Account Settings.

              Paul T – I deleted the password

PKCano – See attachment for SMTP settings

It seems that I do have the SMTP settings setup for yahoo dot com but can’t seem to setup a password for it. If I go to Account Setting-> Thunderbird settings-> Privacy & Security-> Passwords-> Saved Passwords  there is no password for SMTP.  Is there a way to setup the password?

    • #2701382

Write down BOTH your regular password and the App Password

Even better, store them in your pasword manager.

      cheers, Paul

You don’t set the password in TB, you put the details in for the email service and then TB will ask for the password when it first connects – when you send an email.

I’ve pulled out what little hair I have left!!!

Is there anyway to restart from the beginning?  I tried File->New->Existing Account which will allow me to enter my email address and password.  It finds all the right servers for Yahoo! but when I click on done I get “Incoming server already exists”  I am really spinning my wheels here.

Incoming servers are shown under the account in the Account Settings panel.
Outgoing Servers (SMTP) are shown at the very bottom of the Account Settings panel.

Okay I have an update. First, I am doing all this on a test machine so not too worried of losing everything.

I decided to start fresh and removed both email accounts. I have 2 email addresses which I would like to use. And like I said before everything was working perfectly a month or so ago. I have one yahoo dot com email address and one rogers dot com which uses yahoo. If I first use my yahoo dot com address everything get setup okay but when I confirm the smtp and imap servers it pops up a window to sign into my rogers dot com account!!  Even though I have no information about rogers dot com setup yet.

If I first use my rogers dot com address, I am able to login and the smtp and imap servers get setup and I can use it but only to download emails not to send emails. If I try to get an app password for my rogers dot com for some reason I cannot login to my account via Firefox. I keep getting invalid password even though it works with Thunderbird!!

I am sure you are as confused as I am. Any thoughts of what else I can try?

If you log in through a browser directly to the email site, you need to use your regular password (NOT the App Password).

If you log in through T-Bird (an APP(, you need to use the App Password (NOT the regular password) because you are using an APP.

This applies to both Incoming (POP or IMAP) and Outgoing (SMTP) mail

I thought I should update on my progress with Thunderbird and Yahoo! Mail.

After deleting my 2 email accounts I am no longer able to connect for either of them.  I can’t connect for IMAP or SMTP.  I am no longer getting incoming emails.  It seems to me that my passwords are not working. I am not willing to reset my passwords and risk losing access on my phone or tablet. I might try to see if I can find another email client for Linux. Maybe I’ll have better luck,

Thanks PKCano and Paul T for your help.

It’s not about luck, or the email client, it’s putting the right info in the right spot.

Don’t reset your password, reset Thunderbird by creating a new profile, then add Yahoo in the new profile.

If you are using T-Bird to access email on a Yahoo-based/hosted email, you need the regular password for access to the account through a browser (directly on Yahoo website) and an App Password in the password box (instead of the regular password) of T-Bird for receiving/sending mail through the App.
The App password is generated by going to the Security Section in the mail on Yahoo. It is a 16-character arbitrarily-generated string. You should use the App password, instead of the regular password, when using T-Bird. The App password is for both POP/IMAP and SMTP. The SMTP (outgoing) has to be set for “same as incoming”

So I took Paul T’s advice and ran Profile_Manager to create a new profile in Thunderbird. It was pretty straight forward and gave me a fresh account to use.  I tried again my yahoo.com and rogers.com email accounts without any luck.  However, I have a gmail account which I tried and it did work. When I created the account I used the password that I already had and NOT an App Password.

For my yahoo.com account. it currently uses an account key to sign in.  If I try signing in through Firefox it tells me to open Yahoo Mail on my phone and I just confirm that I am logging in and then it signs me in. I don’t remember how I originally setup the account in Thunderbird. I must have used the password that I have.

I don’t have any idea about my rogers.com email.  It seems that its a password issue but why does it work on my phone and tablet?

why does it work on my phone and tablet?

Because you set it up correctly.

When you setup the new Yahoo mail in TB you may be using the wrong password.

This Yahoo page explains how to create an app passsword.

OK so I haven’t given up yet! There must be an “issue” with Yahoo! IMAP services.  I logged on to my MBA and I was using Apple Mail App, and it doesn’t send or receive email either.  I say IMAP services because just tonight I was playing around with Thunderbird on Linux and I chose POP3 and I got a different response than IMAP.  It “popped” up a new window to sign into my Yahoo account.  I made it further than IMAP which just says “Probably wrong configuration, username or password”

If I continue down the POP3 path, I think there is a setting to keep emails on the server? Seeing that I use IMAP on all my devices I don’t want to delete messages from the server.  Any thoughts?

Apple mail App is an APP. You need to generate an App Password for it and use it instead of your regular password in the setup for access to Yahoo hosted email.

My Mom used to tell me “Patience is a virtue” I only wish that I had more patience.

Today I logged into my Macbook Air Monterey, and clicked on the Apple Mail App. To my surprise my Yahoo mail and Rogers mail was downloading. I know I was playing around with the accounts on Tuesday but I am sure I never used an App Password. Unfortunately I can not seem to see my server settings in the Apple Mail App. I also noticed that the SMTP server for Rogers is smtp.broadband.rogers.com and not smtp.mail.yahoo.com.  So there was something wrong on Yahoo and Rogers side of things.  I’ve also attached a file showing the rogers smtp server.

Tonight I fired up my Linux Mint 21.3 test machine.  I only had my gmail account set up which worked without any issue.  So I decided to setup my Yahoo email account and it worked too.  I did not use an App Password but the regular password I use when signing in by Firefox.

I wanted to thank PKCano and Paul T for their patience with me.  Hopefully if this happens gain I’ll be more patient,
