Different strokes for different folks. I have always loved Outlook even from its earliest days. On Windows 7 I’m running Outlook 2010 Beta 2 and like it nearly as much as 2007. I also have Windows Mail up and running as well. I personally don’t like “online” mail clients. I can send/receive my Gmail account via Outlook without having to open a browser.

Not including a mail client in Windows 7 was a major ‘faux pas’, IMHO, despite all the pressure from the EU, et al. Apple includes one, all the Linux distros include one, why was Microsoft singled out on this issue along with browsers, media players, etc… SILLINESS!

I used to use Outlook 2007, but since my ISP switched to Google Apps for its email I generally use Firefox now to access email. If it was not for the switch I would still be using Outlook.

If you are going to switch to Thunderbird you may want to wait a little while, Thunderbird 3 is due to be released in the near future. Though no date has been set for the release, Thunderbird 3 is in the final testing phase prior to release, with release candidate 2 being made available a few days ago.

Outlook is overkill for most people. It has lots of great features for an office environment, but for just straight personal email I use Thunderbird. I use Outlook at work with an Exchange Server, and we can share contacts, schedule meetings and rooms, and setup server side filtering rules so the mail is sorted before you even open your Outlook in the morning.

Anyway, I like both apps, just depends on your needs!

We currently use Outlook 2007 in the office. As Nathan H stated it “has lots of great features for an office environment”.

Personally, I like to use web based email. Since I am a Comcast subscriber I use their web based email. I also make use of Google mail.

I can only agree with what has already been mentioned.
Poco Mail, Thunderbird and Windows Live Mail.
I’ve used Poco Mail for a long time and liked it a lot, but stopped when it came time to purchase a newer version. That’s when I switched to Mozilla Thunderbird along with Windows Live.
A nice feature about Windows live is that you can install the application on your desktop and download your messages or you can access the application directly on the internet.

I’m still using Eudora, but will probably switch to Outlook soon. It’s a shame they stopped developing Eudora, but maybe “Penelope”, the Thunderbird version of it, will be better than raw Thunderbird. I use MS Office a lot, so the better integration will help.

Gmail is my email ISP, but webmail is way too slow for me to use as my main client. Gmail/GApps is a great email host though, if you’re having problems elsewhere–I switched all our company email there a year ago and it’s been very solid and less painful.

Webmail “too slow” surprised me. I am an American living in Ukraine, and use Gmail as my primary email service with no difficulties. I would expect it would be faster, if anything, in the U.S. I also tend to get hundreds of email messages per day (I’m on quite a few mail lists) and, again, rarely have any performance issues. I have used various email clients over the years–including Pegasus, Eudora, Thunderbird, and quite a few others.

Of course, part of the speed is that I use Linux for the bulk of my Web browsing, which tends to be much faster than Windows to start with at that task. I do have XP on a dual boot setup, though, and have not noticed any real issues with Gmail from there, although it is a bit slower than when in Linux on the same box.

The real time I had problems with email performance was when I had to use a desktop client with sufficient spam filtering enabled to make it not quite so annoying. That can drag performance down substantially.

I just read where Eudora 8 Beta was released. Eudora is not dead yet!

I really like the T’bird 3.0 Beta but I need to find a way to enhance the ‘Address Book’ Outlook has spoiled me with theirs.
BTW, anyone know where to find a T’bird plugin that makes setting up Address Book lists quick?

I graduated from Outlook Express, and have used T’bird almost exclusively for more than three years. The only competitor I use at all is the mail client built into Opera. Outlook would have been overkill, and was obviously an easy way in for hackers.

I have always been pleased with T’bird’s size, speed, and the usability of the user interface. Now I like the add-ons enough to tolerate the extra inertia. What I regret is the obscurity of the underlying structure, which becomes apparent as soon as I want to alter anything – a camel designed by a committee? I deplore the absence of coherent help – T’bird needs a .HLP file.

So far, nobody does!
Perhaps it would be as slow scanning a column of hundreds of addresses to check-mark a dozen for putting into a group address-list as to do it the T’bird way and enter the nicknames of the dozen.

Used and loved Outlook. However it seems as whenever I viewed a PDF Outlook locked and I had to end the process. I am now using Thunderbird and while it’s not Outlook, I’m happy with it.

Outlook has an outstanding Address Book. But it’s bloatware for the average home user. Most of features are designed to be an MS Exchange client. In that it shines. But for home use I use Thunderbird. I only wish it had an address book half as good as Outlook.

I’m a Eudora addict from way back – over 15 years! Still with 7.1.0.9, the last version produced by the Qualcomm team. I tried 8 but didn’t like it, it wasn’t a smooth/simple transition from the Qualcomm versions.

Thunderbird. Get it free from the Mozilla site. Works great. Alternatively, I also use GMail on line. Tremendous asset when not on home/primary computer. Good Luck

I use Outlook 2007 on my laptop and collect email from other email clients such as Gmail and an old Hotmail account in Outlook. All together Outlook manages five different accounts pretty seamlessly. I have to agree about the address book, it fits perfectly for what I need and I haven’t found anything that I feel is good replacement. Tried a bunch, but keep coming back to Outlook.

I use Eudora 7 and have since the earliest days when MS Outlook was riddled with viruses. Unfortunately, it is no longer supported and the merger with Thunderbird seems to be hanging in oblivion. I need to make a move and Thunderbird is probably my choice.

I’ve used OE from the beginning and recently switched to Windows Livemail with only a Hotmail account.
I put too much time in them and, I’m sorry to say, too lazy to go looking for something else.
They’ve proven workable & reliable as I have emails dating back 10 years.

Lets see, I have been through Outlook Express, Outlook, Eudora, Thunderbird and few minor others.

Now I use ‘The Bat’ with antispam snipper for over two years. This program may be more complex then most need. But with its filter and script system makes the incoming 50 emails a day a lot easier to handle. The Bat is a paid program.

I’ve used Mulberry for almost ten years, and I LOVE it! I’ve found it to be far and away the best email client for handling IMAP. I’ve tried a number of other email programs, including Thunderbird 2 and 3, The Bat!, Eudora 7 and 8, Pegasus, Mail Forge, Becky, Poco Mail, and perhaps some others that don’t come immediately to mind, along with web-based Gmail, but though some of them have features I like, none of them comes close to offering me the sophisticated IMAP support that Mulberry does. For that reason, even though I’d prefer Mulberry to be a little less conservative/more flexible when it comes to graphics, I keep using it and getting rid of most of the others.

Pegasus has been around since 1990 and led the way in the introduction of many of the features now taken by granted in email clients. It is still under development by the original author, and although it is still free, users can contribute financially for its continued development. I has a users forum (quiite recently started) on the web, and has a dedicated band of very knowlegable users who respond to questions of all sorts on the Pegasus Mail Discussion List (a listserv at bama.ua.edu).

I have used it for years, and although it is a bit quirky it is a brilliant piece of software. I have looked and used (from time to time) many other email clients, but none can match Pegasus.

Currently using Outlook2007 for my work laptop and integration works great with other MS apps. Like it a lot with little or no hassles in most cases.
But Entourage (MS Outlook for Mac) leaves a lot to be desired! I guess the support for MAC user using MS is not a priority.

I have been using Thunderbird since the early versions for all my private e-mail. Used to use Outlook for work until I retired in 2006. Outlook was the “required” email client at work. Scheduled conference rooms, meeting attendance, etc. was all down on Outlook. No need for any of that now!

Eudora 7. Still works, even in Windows 7. I believed that there would be a lower likelyhood of malware propogating itself through my address book. So far, so good. I tried the Thunderbird Eudora Penelope idea but when I discovered that Eudora 7 still works, I saw no reason to change.

I’ve used Pegasus since about 1996 and am really happy with that.

Tried Eudora before that, but wasn’t too thrilled, though a couple friends wouldn’t change.

I have used Eudora since Version 3, and now use the Thunderbird version of it, which is now Eudora 8, Beta 8. This is only a skin of Thunderbird, and under the hood, it is Thunderbird 3.0, Beta 3. Works well for me, but I miss the old-style Eudora Mailboxes. There’s spam filtering, a DOM filter (prevents certain exploits through e-mail attachments, including the current round of infected PDFs) and many Thunderbird plug-ins are compatible with this Eudora. I use this client with Yahoo MailPlus and G-Mail, and can send outbound mail through the G-Mail SendMail Servers. This product is no longer independent of Thunderbird, but it is very much alive and well and under development. Much easier to set up and configure than Outlook, but fewer features for power-users.

I use Eudora 7.1 (the last true Eudora version) for almost everything. I love it. However, Eudora never adapted to Unicode, and so for writing or reading mail that involves typical Hebrew or Arabic, for instance, or that uses fancier HTML, I use Thunderbird. Eudora gives you the choice of using your browser or an older, simpler HTML for HTML emails, and I feel more secure viewing most of them with the much less powerful Eudora viewer.

I use Thunderbird 2 with four add-ons: Lightning (full-featured calendar that imports/exports as .ics or .csv, and will sync with Google’s calendar; Buttons! (enables certain button behaviors that I want – like going back to the inbox when I delete an email window); MoreFunctionsForAddressbook (adds some fields and features); and Contacts Sidebar, which does what it says.

I like that I can monitor multiple email AND newsgroup subscriptions with it. I also like the ease of backing up and moving or copying files to new machines. The default setup is good for 90% of users, and it can be tweaked easily by the other 10%.

I haven’t switched to Thunderbird 3 yet, because I found it somewhat buggy in the way it handles addresses, and they’ve only recently come out with a Lightning beta calendar for it. I was kind of surprised they released it final in such an unpolished state. I had a hellish time rolling back, and T’Bird is usually much easier to handle than that. Part of it’s my fault. I didn’t realize that it was such a sea change, and I only backed up a couple of my content files – not the full folder backup that I usually do.

I’ll be switching in a few months, once it’s a little more stable.

Once I got used to the way Gmail works, I’ve never looked back. The keyboard shortcuts, the ability to search my entire email archive instantly, and the archive feature that keeps my inbox tidy have made using email a breeze for me.

It’s not for everyone (nothing is), but for me it works wonders. I’m using Google Apps Premium Edition because I want the added security of being able to reach a human being in an emergency and because I like to play around with the extra features available in Premium Edition.

Just moving from 14 years with Eudora Pro – paid version to Postbox. Actually, it is on a six month trial. Nothing has come close to how well Eudora Pro 7.1, the last of the Qualcomm versions – now in open source and working with Mozilla.

Honest statement: at the height of a project, in the two weeks before production, and also working on concerts and shows a year out, I would get 150 to 180 email messages. I used 240 email boxes, then some nested with in folders.

I used about 250 filters and Eudora Pro worked wonderfully. The rich filter system the gave was amazing. I could even have a message forwarded to the correct people before I had read it, which I can do with Postbox also.

The only problem I am having with Postbox is getting it to take up to four email accounts – different domains, but they say it is possible, I will figure it out or back to Eudora which never had an issue with that.

The reason for the change is that Postbox is more up-to-date and ties into social networking Web sites, and into the Web over all. My big test, beyond the filters, will be how well it searches. Eudora Pro, in its last Qualcomm versions used X1 technology to search for email and it was brilliant. I was already an X1 user from the alpha and beta tests. So, there just was no way to lose an email. Postbox has even better ways to file messages and I am hoping their search system is as good, though, I still have X1 running on the full computer.

How embarrassing, I am adding to my own post, but after reading all of the other very good posts, I realized how many email clients I have tried and used for some period of time, but, never thought I would change from Eudora. I would run two programs at once – letting Eudora do its job, but also seeing how the other program handled the email.

I would pay for these programs for I would want to use them for more than thirty days and who knows, I might want to go back to one at some point. I realized I have used:

Eudora Pro – as mentioned above, for 14 years. Also, I run it on a very small and fast external drive, so I can take it with me anywhere and be fine. I run a daily back-up of the program and email messages.
I tried Pegasus and like it, just never made the switch.
I also used Barca for a good while, and then Barca Pro. Having never really used Outlook, this seemed to be a decent competitor. It is a very stable program and handled the filters and all quite well.
And, of course, Poco mail – I think many of us have tried it at some time, it does a great job. TODAY is the 10th birthday of Poco mail, see its site for details: http://tinyurl.com/y8rjzr3
Also, both of the Barca email clients have moved a long ways since I tried them. The Bat! was the one I like the best and came close to using.

Then Mulberry and Thunderbird, Opera, which is integrated well with its latest browser version.
I really tried t make Alpine work for me, I just couldn’t get it to do what I wanted. It was fun to try and I know there are people who have it running really well. It came from the University of Washington

A friend of mine used I.Scribe or InScribe – not sure, but it must have been the paid version. http://tinyurl.com/odg9a Even with some deficiencies he loved it, cool.

Then, there are all of the other email clients which I have never tried, such as: Sylpheed which runs very well on Unix and Linux, but does run on Windows: http://tinyurl.com/yb2wdjp and the list goes on.

Though I am trying out Postbox, I have a feeling that even if I get it really up to speed, I will fall back to the my friend in the foxhole, Eudora Pro 7.1 We will see.

Any reason for not going with Version 8 of Eudora? I like it on my laptop. It is really Thunderbird under the hood now, but the interface is very recognizable to this long-time Eudora user.

I’m also a staunch Eudora 7 user and I haven’t found any reason to change so far, even though I’m using W7 64-bit and have had to get used to not having MAPI usage in programs such as MSWord which is a pain.

Is Eudora 8 as versatile as the old version? With E7, you can pull the stuffing out of it and re-assemble it to your heart’s content (all the mailboxes and config files are text-based). Can you still do that with E8?

As I posted above, Eudora 8 is basically Thunderbird with their Penelope interface. Like Thunderbird, this Eudora does not use the old-style .mbx and .toc system , which was basically text-based files. Thunderbird’s Profiles much more resemble those of Firefox, and are nowhere near as easy to pick apart. There is an Export feature, but I never use that. If I want to back up my Thunderbird/Eudora mail, I just go into my User Application Data, find the Thunderbird Folder, and copy and paste that to another partition or drive. That is my e-mail backup scheme with the new Eudora. I do like the way it does IMAP, which is useful as I have an account with FastMail (now owned by Opera, the same people who do the browser).

I too have been using Pegasus for many years, 1994 or 5, and am not any sort of an Xpert with these systems. I thought the learning curve would be rather difficult to get past with such a powerful program, it was very easy. Am now working with my Wife to assist her in becoming a Pegasus user. Most of my problems have been with my ISP always telling me, “sorry but we do not support that client” and I tell them they do not need to as I know how to use it. Have been using this for over 12 years and know how to set it up and have it do what I want, with filters, SPAM blocker, sort and send to my selected mailboxes and even an encryptor that I have not used yet.

I set up a computer with Windows 7. Thunderbird was the closest I could find to replace Outlook Express. Once configured, it works fine.

I use Thunderbird – with a couple of add-ons it does everything I need it for, including scheduling and reminding me about meetings and anniversaries, keeping a Task List (Lightening), telling me the time in various cities in the world (foxclocks), etc.

I have always used outlook express and love it. However, I did try using Outlook and hated it. In fact, Outlook would not let me view all the saved emails I transferred from OE and I hated the layout of it too. When I had Vista, I tried Windows Mail but found it was not backward compatible with OE although OE did transfer some mail to it but some of it was lost in the shuffle and I needed the mail that was lost so I went back to trusty old Outlook Express. I use Gmail too for all my mail needs but prefer to download my mail from OE. I’ve looked at Incredimail and it looked and acted alot like OE but it put scrolled ads until you paid for it. At one time, I had a Mac and had nothing but problems using the macmail client. I returned my mac due to problems and have returned to using xp.

Eudora 7.1.0.9 Paid version – Love it – Wish Act would recognize it though. Tried E8 and Thunderbird / Penelope etc and did not like them as much as E7.

Personally I used OE for many years and would still be using it if it were not the fact that Microsoft is going to stop supporting it. It has some features that I really like that made email sensible and easy. Wish Microsoft would reconsider. I am now using Thunderbird 3.0.4 and its OK but there are still allot of glitches. Like slow start; and again, the techs either don’t want to or can’t fix some of these issues. I was thinking about getting a copy of Outlook 2007(with free upgrade to 2010) as a stand alone, but its allot of money AND I too think its an overkill for my needs.

I was replying to this forum just awhile ago and suddenly my browser, FF v3.6.3, just closed and my message has been lost. My system is Win7 64bit on a laptop, having issues with this as the keyboard is flat and the keys are just straight across. With my big hands and fingers some times I hit more than one key at a time, maybe 3 or 4 and the touch mouse that is here is in my way when typing. I prefer the ergo keyboard and plan on moving back to that and getting rid of this flat system.

As for the E-Mail clients Pegasus Mail is the one for me, Eudora was my Wife’s preference and I find it not very friendly to me or maybe it is the other way around. Thunderbird v3.0.4 that I have on my system now will not download my e-mail as they keep changing my e-mail server to one that is not mine. Plus I need to get with my AV software, Alwil’s Avast! to see what they can do about my e-mail SSL that they say their AV will do the SSL validation for me and not set it in my client, WRONG, after two days of not being able to download my mail I changed my AV from doing my SSL for my e-mail to my client and my e-mail is working again.

Enough with my problems for now will get back L8R, on to Avast! for this new problem,

Since many of the Smart Phones (including ours) sync with MS Outlook, we always use it. Can’t see any real advantage to using another email program although for non-family and close friends, I use a gmail account and have it forwarded to Outlook. Comcast Web Mail takes a long time to load on my son’s dial-up connection so we never use it. We just stop Gmail’s forwarding emails while we are on trips or at his home.

I’m still hooked on Eudora.
Using 5.2.1 at home and in my opinion it’s the best one
Qualcomm produced. 6 was terrible and 7 has too many
bells and whistles I dislike (or don’t need).

At work, I had to switch from Eudora to Thunderbird
when a re-installation of Eudora on an XP Pro did not
work with an Error message that it was a 16-bit application.
(Eudora 5.2.1. had been running on this computer for years
but I had to re-install it after a hard drive died.)

Thunderbird’s not too bad and Eudora 8 with or without
Penelope launches as Eudora.

FYI, Thunderbird misplaced emails in one folder of several years.
I can’t find any file or segment of file anywhere searching with keywords.
TBird just sent them into Hell

I just installed Eudora 5.2.1 on a new Acer desktop running Windows 7 Pro.

It only works if it’s NOT installed to Program Files (x86).

I install all my Eudoras in C:Eudora name.
Works like a charm.

A question about program conflicts.

My boss has used Eudora for many years; he likes it and refuses to migrate. It is registered as the preferred email client in the Windows settings. Recently, he changed his security suite to the paid-for Kaspersky program. In the Kaspersky settings, the option to send messages about faults is NOT ticked. However, when Kaspersky does its scheduled scan, he gets an error message to the effect that his email client is not recognised. To date, Kaspersky has registered a clean bill of health after each scan. So, whether the option to send messages was ticked or not, there would have been no reason to send an email?

However, I’ve now been tasked with fixing this “error message” problem. Has anyone got any suggestions?

Eudora 7.1.0.9 Great program!! Have tried other email clients (Outlook, Eudora 8, Penelope, Thunderbird) but none compares (yet). Works like a dream. Qualcomm (and Qualcomm employees) please work out that you have a world-beating product and get Eudora 8 working properly in terms of managing personalities. The depth of support to Eudora on this thread is amazing (and encouraging).

Like another poster, I install Eudora in my data partition, that way it fully backs up with my data every day. I can then reinstall it on any Windows machine by copying the whole Eudora directory from the backup into the new data partition and reinstalling Eudora “over the top”. It then picks up exactly where it was.

I use IncrediMail Premium for my Email. I like how easy it is to use plus when I’ve been dissatisfied with some features an email to the developers and it was changed.

It also has easy ways of including pictures and animated emoticons in the email, something I haven’t found elsewhere.

One of the features I want was the ability to input a send group and then expand the group and delete one or more entries. That way when I pass on a joke or other email that one of my circle of friends has sent me I can delete their email address so they don’t get it back.

I am like you, Outlook is bulky and has the disadvantage of being a costly program.

With M$ constantly changing things, and having to pay out good money to keep current, I dropped it when I upgraded to Windows 7. I am now using Incredimail (paid version) instead. Like every other program,it has its advantages and its disadvantages. But now I don’t have to keep paying for expensive upgrades to M$.

Hi Folks,
I’ve been using Thunderbird 3.0.4 for the past two weeks and I find it very slow when you try and delete any Email. Any mail with an attachment on it takes up to 1 minute.(ugg). It also takes a lot longer to download mail from the server.
Anyone having the same problem?

Used Outlook for my business PC’s and Outlook Express at home. Nothing wrong with either in the right environment.

I am now retired. Outlook is overkill for home use. I wanted a few more feature so I switched to Thunderbird a few years back and haven’t looked back. And I also use gMail, Yahoo Mail, Opera, and Windows Live online. Except for gMail, the others were to get other features. I guess I have about 15 email addresses, mostly divided up among my different hobbies.

Currently using Eudora (long time user) and have been trying Thunderbird and Outlook. Too many issues going on for me to stick with one. I always stayed with Eudora because I could specify the message location and I kept those on a shared network drive. That way I could read my email from any of the computers at home by pointing them all to the shared folder. Now because of email on my new Blackberry I have switched from pop to imap. At least that lets me see my messages from multiple venues. but I keep going back to Eudora to send things and also to forward messages. One of the Items I like in Eudora is the ability to remove quote levels. If I could fix that and easily share my address book across different computers I would probably stay with Thunderbird. I maintain all my phone contacts in Outlook so I can have them backed up and it is easier to maintain them using a full size keyboard. Since I have Outlook in use for the contact maintenance I configure the email and have been trying it.

This has been an interesting thread and I enjoyed reading it.

Am using Thunderbird 3.0.4 and am a long time user. Have tried others and have always come back to TB. Have 5 email addresses and TB pulls them all in. Reading all of them from one application is great. I am a home user and do not have Office, so can’t comment on Outlook. TB is free and a wonderful program. I also have RSS feeds set up there.

I hear Outlook 2010 is quite good, and probably should switch – but I don’t know if it offers the features of my old Eudora 7. Any Eudora users out there who have switched to Outlook 2010?

By the way, Penelope – the so-called replacement for Eudora just doesn’t hack it. It’s a big disappointment, and as far as I know, never made it out of beta.

What is going on with Eudora anyway? Currently I am trying out Chaos Software’s Intellect! which I forgot I still had on my PC (this after going from Vista to XP back to Vista with SP2 and finally to Windows 7 64-bit over a couple years). I like it and for the most part it seems really good and has added features like a calendar, contact list, task list and more.

I tried to give up on Outlook and switch to Thunderbird. That was a mistake, I traded one devil for another. Thunderbird has some good features but is really lacking in some simple areas. The problem that finally drove me back to Outlook (until I find a better solution) was TBird’s (mis)handling of forwarded attachments. That’s a long story and I won’t bore you with it. Just suffice it to say that if you hate Microsoft’s support you aren’t like to fall in love with Mozilla’s. Yeah, I know it is open source and driven by volunteerism but that doesn’t mean a lot if you are in trouble and need some help.

I tried one of the last versions of Eudora too but it would not run correctly on Windows 7 so I wrote it off as a bad replacement choice too.

I installed eMail Client a couple of weeks ago to give it a try and so far I am really impressed with it. I am still running it in parallel with Outlook until I am fully convinced of its viability. The program is freeware for a single copy being run on a single computer. Both visually and operationally it very much resembles Outlook but it far more configurable than the latter. Support seems to be excellent and better than what you would find on most freeware. I noticed a couple of very minor bugs when running it on Windows 7 64bit but they were totally inconsequential to proper operation of the program. As it stands right now I will be switching over to eMail Client as my sole email package very soon.

As I said in an earlier post, I tried out Thunderbird for a few months but it had some strange habits I cold not seem to get past so I abandoned it and reinstalled Outlook 2003 which I already own.

I have done it, wiff my wittle puter all by myseff. I have not used it yet as I have a friend on my phone line at this time and he usually talks for about an hour to maybe three hours. I do like the looks of this and some of the features look like they will help. This is primerally for my “Wife” and she is not easy to please. This is going to be a very large surprise for her as she HATES Pegasus Mail, I like it. But need to have the same as what she is using so I know what is happening when she has a problem.

Glad to help and hope eM Client meets yours and your wife’s needs. Believe me, I know all about hard to please female companions. My wife insisted on using a free version of Incredimail for a very long time until I finally got tired of trying to fix problems in that monster from Hell. I made her an offer she couldn’t refuse. If she wanted my tech support she was going to use Outlook or Outlook Express because they were fairly simple to repair and to customize. As for eM Client, the out of the box appearance is a little too stark black and white for my tastes so I started out by modifying colors, fonts, etc until I got something more eye appealing. Just a hint if you get ragged on for its appearance.

You have NO idea how GREAT this feels to have this up and working as it is right out of the BOX. Only had to make some very important but I consider minor adjustments to be up and running.
