Regarding how to work out the electricity usage, you could buy a Kill A Watt Meter. You would plug it in between the PC and the wall outlet, then alternate between running the computer normally and with the distributed computing application in operation, and compare the respective wattages.
There are also many different projects, besides those noted already here, including those of crowd-sourced scientific research that someone here might be interested to learn more about, maybe even join in. For example this one:

There are a number of other crowd-sourced research projects ran by scientists at NASA and other organizations, public and private. Some NASA projects where one can participate using a computer or a cellphone via the Internet, are marked with a special sign among those described here:
