Western Digital (WD) has been sued in the U.S. for failing WD SanDisk 2TB Extreme Pro SSDs. Several other models also allegedly suffer from the underlying issues that cause these devices to fail. Moreover, WD recently issued an update that only exacerbates the problem. ..

Errors in firmware, disconnections, data loss, RMA’s with Sandisk SSD’s. One reddit member on their second RMA posted that:

Sandisk is junk don’t buy it

Previous to the WD aquisition, Sandisk were a reputable brand name with a quality product.
Probably a business tactic to ‘acquire/ kill off the better competition’ by WD.

Never went with WD for my external HD or SSD. Western Digital always left me skeptical over the years after reading reviews and doing some research, they’re a better price in most cases. Have a Toshiba HD and Samsung SSD for specific devices and they work well.

* Not waiting for disaster to strike I replaced my 4TB SanDisk SSD with 4TB Samsung T7 SSD.

I use WD HDDs for years. Currently 3 HDDs = 16TB.
Never had a problem. These drives are 4+ years old.
I did have problems in the past with Seagate HDDs (now WD).

While WD “tried” to buy Seagate back in 2010, the deal was rejected by Seagate and they’re still separate companies.

Had a bad experience with WD 7200 spinners back in 2007/8.
All for the same client/ friend of a friend:
New Windows XP PC build, 1st HDD returned due to fault, constant clicking, week later 2nd HDD arrived, installed OS and HDD failed soon after. Returned/ RMA to distributor/ online shop and given option of a refund or exchange for a different model, Sammy 7200 spinner won the day, albeit weeks after the initial build.
WD, never again..

More likely a way to expand market share and make more money. It’s standard practice to spread market reach by selling similar products under different names. You save money from manufacturing economies and sell more product because people think they have more choice.

Wow, that’s a bummer. I bought a WD My Passport SSD (1 TB) from Amazon last week… to backup my files and system images. If you can’t trust your backup, who can you trust ?

Backups are not about trust, they are about having a copy in case something goes wrong.

You can test your backup drive easily without having to write to it.
