I keep getting this error “We’re sorry (Really????) but word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Word will need to be closed as a result. Would you like to repair now?”  I have O365 subscription.  I keep it updated.  I have done quick repair, online repair (which de-installed & re-installed O365 – got an error on that! and I had to get download of new version to install.)   Searched online and have found a few things – but nothing that would work for me.  This seems to be most recent – https://support.office.com/en-us/article/error-when-opening-microsoft-office-apps-b84b6a63-4b8c-46ec-ae9a-ad91d6160d72

I am not running MS anitvirus.  ESET & MBAM premium.  I am going to switch to Defender when ESET expires in December.

This error is popping up frequently!  Has anyone seen it, repaired it, know what to do?    thanks.

Have you tried Office Safe Mode to start Word without add-ins?

Open Office apps in safe mode on a Windows PC

No but I can open and use the app.  Just that this error keeps popping up intermittently and repair did not work.   How would safe mode help me to identify if an add-in is causing an issue?  Sorry not familiar with this. thanks.

If you don’t get an error in safe mode you know it’s being caused by an add-in.

safe mode did not resolve the issue

If an Add-In is not responsible, a repair will usually fix this. Try the Quick repair first (5-10 min). If that does not do it, try the longer online repair (time depends mostly on connection speed). Don’t do either if you have time-sensitive work to get out because you won’t be able to use any Office application while it is running.

… and what this does, greatly resembles removing all Office components and reinstalling them fresh from the network.

I’ve even seen the reinstall part of the repair fail due to network issues, leaving you with Office applications not installed. (That location had really bad connectivity.)

Have you tried disabling ESET and MBAM?

ESET  yes.  My subscription ran out and I’m using defender and MBAM, which I did not disable.   It still happens intermittently.

Hello, so I’ve been having this issue for a few months, re-installed Office 2 times, the problem remained.

Any Office document shows this error after 2-5 minutes.

I uninstalled Citrix Workspace 2109, and since, I have had no issues.

I finally broke down & called Microsoft support on my issue. They had me do a bunch of things one of which was to reload windows. That didn’t help. It’s been a long time so I don’t remember the details, but tech support updated something in the registry which fixed it. I don’t know what that was but you could try calling them. It is a very frustrating issue! I hope you can get it fixed.
