Patch reliability is unclear, but widespread attacks make patching prudent. Go ahead and patch, but watch out for potential problems. |

AskWoody_MVPJune 12, 2017 at 11:07 pm #120360Very odd. I manage several WSUS servers and have not yet seen these come up for approval as of today on any of them.
Not that I would until Friday anyway (we don’t approve any patches until the end of the week on Friday night unless they are rated critical for 0-day vulns.)
Edit: This might be because we don’t have Lync installed anywhere? Thus that category is not enabled. Hmmm . . . .

AskWoody LoungerJune 13, 2017 at 5:10 am #120372Well, if you would have approved Lync as a product in WSUS, you would have seen both security updates, presumably way ahead of todays Update Tuesday. Details: Revision Number
200
Description
A security issue has been identified in a Microsoft Lync software product that could affect your system. You can help protect your system by installing this update from Microsoft. For a complete listing of the issues that are included in this update, see the associated Microsoft Knowledge Base article. After you install this update, you may have to restart your system.

AskWoody LoungerJune 13, 2017 at 4:06 pm #120476Well, Patch Tuesday is here with the following updates for Windows 8.1:
Important-
KB4022726 2017-06 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems
KB4022730 2017-06 Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 8.1 for x-64 based Systems
KB890830 Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016 x64 Edition – June 2017
Optional, Recommended-
KB3186539 Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7 for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64
Interesting that .NET is now in the Optional-Recommended section. Remember, we are still at MS-DEFCON 2, so don’t install these updates until we’re given the all clear.
Fortran, C++, R, Python, Java, Matlab, HTML, CSS, etc.... coding is fun!

AskWoody_MVPJune 13, 2017 at 4:15 pm #120480I would put .NET Framework 4.7 on hold under all circumstances as the removal in case of trouble is complicated. This is not needed now and will not be needed for a while until software mandating this version will be released.
.NET Framework 4.6.2 is very stable and reliable unless running specific server software which does not support it well (Exchange, Lync Server, certain versions and patching levels).
The other patches are likely to uninstall easy if they cause any problem, assuming that they do not cause blue screens. Still not recommended to install yet unless for testing.1 user thanked author for this post.
