    If you open the solution center and go to settings there are no choices for “Scan Settings and Preferences” everything else has another drop down menu for option. I can access the scanner through Irfanview>Select Twain Source device there are two choices: HP Officejet 5600 series TWAIN 1.0 (32-32) and WIA-HP Officejet 5600 series TWAIN 1.0 (32-32). If I use the first one I get and error message “Unable to communicate with HP software. Please verify that it has been installed and is working properly.” and “TWAIN error! Can’t connect to device or the TWAIN deriver not installed!” The second works fine.

    I’m connected to the printer using USB and can print with no problem. I’m running XP SP3 and HP software version is 50.0.152.000. I tried HP and didn’t even get a response. This worked fine at one time.

      How did you contact HP? You should be able to initiate a chat session from their web site.

      I find the HP software more akin to bloatware and fairly clunky to use, but it does do all the things you need.
      I would live with it as long as it’s working, if not I’d un-install and re-install.

      I’ve contacted HP and nothing and I have removed and reinstalled the software several times and yes the HP software is a bloated POS.

      I have an HP Officejet 6400 and have had lots of problems with the Scan function in the Solution Center. Last august, I spent over 9 hours with their tech reps around the world to get it operating, and now it has stopped again. The machine is working well. The new Solution Center that HP designed to work with everything seems to be both the bloater and the cause of problems. I’ve been using HP for 30 years, but this may get me to switch.

      The WIA driver is a Microsoft Windows Image Aquisition driver. The fact that the scanner works with this suggests that the scanner driver needs to be re-installed. Try a complete uninstall (and reboot) and reinstall of the printer drivers, making sure you choose to install the TWAIN drivers. (You might need to choose the custom or advanced users option to see everything)
