    I have a user who receives e-mail sent to an Exchange 2007 e-mail distribution list, but she’s not a member of that list. I have verified via the Exchange Management Shell that she is a member of one distribution list, which happens to be a mail enabled security group. The commands I used to verify this are:

    Get-DistributionGroup | where { (Get-DistributionGroupMember $_ | foreach {$_.name}) -contains “yourUserName” }

    Get-DistributionGroup | where { (Get-DistributionGroupMember $_ | foreach {$_.PrimarySmtpAddress}) -contains “yourUserPrimaryEmailAddress” }

    Any ideas as to why this could be happening?

      Was this an upgrade from a prior version of Exchange?

      Is there any coexistence between the Exchange 2007 server and other Exchange servers with different versions?

      Does it make any difference who the sender is?

      Are the distribution lists large enough to be troublesome to recreate?

      Thanks for the reply, JoeP517. The upgrade from a prior version of Exchange happened years ago. It is the only Exchange server we use (there’s only 1). I’m not sure if it makes any difference who the sender is. I’ll have to check on that. If it does make a difference what does that tell you? Lastly, the DL is huge so recreating it would not be an option.

      I’ve seen some very strange things happen with DLs and upgraded Exchange installs. Somehow on local PCs I’ve seen what appear to be cached entries with obsolete references to the old Exchange server. Mostly though within a few months of an upgrade not a few years.

      If the sender is an internal user you could have the sender force a recreation of the OAB.

      Have you forced Exchange to recreate the OAB?

      Was the user who is receiving the incorrect email ever a member of the DL list in question?

      Are you sure it is not being forwarded by a rule or they are a delegate of someone in the list?
      Try searching the delivery tracking logs to see what’s happening.

      cheers, Paul
