I am currently in Afghanistan and have to connect temporarily to a local ISP that requires a login through a web redirect (captive portal) much like most hotels use.

I pay for the service, and my login works just fine as long as I connect directly with my computer. However I cannot connect a wireless router and authenicate through it. Can anyone tell me why? I have tried cloning my ethernet adaptor’s MAC address, using PPoE, and tunneling. Nothing works. Somehow either my router will NOT pass through the authenication, or the ISP is detecting the router and blocking.

How do I fix this? HELP! :o:

As I understand it captive portal uses a browser session for authentication. Your router won’t have support for that as it doesn’t have a browser.

Thanks Paul, I got that. But there are plenty of other users who have wireless access points on this provider’s service. Why do the two different routers I have tried (both very sophisticated) not work, but others do? There has to be a setting somewhere that I have overlooked.

See if one of the people whose router works can bring their router to where you connect, and then try to connect in your location with their router.

If it works, then either compare your settings to theirs, or get the same router that they have.

You mentioned “wireless access point”. If they have that as opposed to a router, then all they are doing is rebroadcasting the signal; they aren’t doing the same thing that a router would do. (Not exactly the same thing.)
