AskWoody PlusJuly 1, 2024 at 8:25 am #2684544Hi Ben:
Thanks for those excellent tips.
When you were discussing the free web-based Office apps at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/free-office-online-for-the-web in your article you said “There is one other caveat. You are expected to save anything you create on your OneDrive, but this can easily be subverted“. How is this done?
Is it as simple as a File | Save As and browsing to the location were you want your file saved?

AskWoody PlusJuly 1, 2024 at 8:23 pm #2684893Why office 365 is a LOSE-LOSE for all!
Just what I need, malewaresoft looking at every document and spreadsheet I make. Malewaresoft seeing everything I say and do. They are just as bad if not worse than google in tracking your every move. And the online versions, both malwaresoft and google, logging your keystrokes and reading everything. And don’t forget the “secure” online storage HA HA HA HA HA.

AskWoody MVPJuly 3, 2024 at 6:06 am #2685215I don’t think Microsoft is as bad as Google. Data-mining customers and serving up ads based on that is Google’s main business. It’s not Microsoft’s main business. It is bothersome enough (along with other characteristics of Windows 10) that I left the Microsoft platform after 25 years, but Google’s much worse, IMO.
Like it or not, many people feel as though they are tied to Microsoft’s office ecosystem. It’s one of the most frequent reasons people give when they explain why they are not moving to Linux, despite being thoroughly frustrated by Windows and the direction it has gone since 2015. But when that office ecosystem is accessible by web, suddenly it is OS-agnostic. Use your browser from Linux, use your browser from Windows, and they both will work fine.
I would never want a web-based application suite to be my main go-to for anything, but I could see using something like 365 along with LibreOffice if I absolutely had to go Microsoft. LibreOffice is generally compatible, but people always mention that some things don’t look the same, and they want to make sure they are seeing exactly what the others will when looking at the same file. It would be possible to do most the stuff in LibreOffice, and then give it a final check on 365 and make adjustments, if necessary.
I’ve never used spreadsheets or word processors in this era when the document file is the actual product, so I am just going by what I heard. When I used word processors and spreadsheets often, it was the printed copy that mattered, so as long as the import function from a MS file format worked, everything was fine, as I would be doing the final editing on the same application that would be printing it.

AskWoody PlusOctober 21, 2024 at 10:28 pm #2711868Ben,
Three years ago, I bought a basic HP computer (Win 10 SSD 256) when I noticed my older gaming computer was getting finicky. I have started using it this year. It came with PC Assist Software UK Essential Office installed on it. Free MS 365 is on it too but I never registered it with my Outlook email address. I used this Essential Office for a few documents and noticed that these were also being saved by MS 365 as Word documents. Do you know anything about this Essential Office product? Can you explain what is occurring with MS 365?
Windows 10 Home. HP 12GB RAM 256GB SSD 4year old desktop.

Essential Office uses Word-compatible file formats and extensions.
