    Morning all

I have asked this on another forum and despite receiving some excellent answers and advice I have not quite found what I am looking for and thought perhaps somebody here may be able to help. I need to find a weather forum that lays out the information in a table format because I want to run a web query (web scrape) from within Excel and most of the sites such as BBC, MSN, WMO, Weather Underground etc. shows information for one location or area which would mean multiple queries going on at the same time.

The example below shows basically what I am after but I would like as many cities in the list as possible, any help appreciated

This certainly qualifies as scuttlebutt. The ‘not quite found what I am looking for’ (despite receiving etc.) does have a familiar ring to it. One might go so far as to imagine that you would like it served on a silver salver without your having to lift a finger.

I cannot be a purveyor of ‘the real goods’, but I might add to your collection of answers (but not advice) with a few parallel oddities.

Depending on your version of Windows you may have any number of desktop gadgets, such as a clock, and you can plaster your desktop with clocks with times from the four corners of the earth, as we members of The Flat Earth Society like to refer to it. Maybe you can do the same with the weather.

Then there is the matter of RSS feeds, which will keep the information streaming in on a continuous basis, so you can collect weather feeds on a continuous basis, and it strikes me as inconceivable that you could not, given the importance of weather to these newfangled heavier-than-air flying machines. If man had been meant to fly, he would have been born with wings.

This is strictly a parallel, but if you care to give the free (promotional) Ashampoo toolbar a try, they have a dandy collection of English-language newspapers that cover the map to the extent that it can be covered, and all of which I presume report upon the local weather. They may look out the window, or a runner may bring news of it to them, or, come to think of it, they may be downloading it from weather satellites. Say, maybe you can too, but what’s a temperature without a humidex and an ‘air quality index’ and a pollen count. Oversimplification is a risky business. There is big money in smog control and hay fever remedies. Asthmatics will despise you, or worse.

As for converting such things to the style of display that suits your fancy of the day, I can only suggest that that be left to the lower order of servants.

      Dear Peter

I am not quite sure what I asked for that provoked such a vitriolic response from you.

Scuttlebutt used to be a place where ‘friends’ met and exchanged links, chewed the fat and asked for help if they were stuck doing something. If that has changed under the new management and Scuttlebutt is now used for some other reason then that I am sorry, I was not aware of the change and perhaps the ‘Management’ should advise everybody.

I believed that in my request for help I had covered all of the reasons why I was looking for something further than that which I had extensively searched for myself and which users of another, friendly, lounge had tried to contribute.

It was not laziness that prompted the post but the belief that some other lounger might have had a weather interest and knew of a web page that they could point out to me.

It is apparent that before attacking my post you had not read it correctly because I was not asking for weather widgets etc. for the desktop but for something to use in Excel for a project.

For this project I need to determine live temperatures from almost any origin, via any waypoint to an eventual destination so that we can determine the correct packaging and temperature control for the transplant organs etc. that we ship. If the shipments go out of temperature parameter the contents are ruined which could mean life or death or the ruin of years of research.

I apologise if I have ever offended you in this or a former life and I will stop posting in these forums in case I ever do accidently offend.

There are just too many cities in the world. That’s my guess as to why no one publishes a single page with all of them listed. That said, there appear to be many sources offering open APIs to fetch data for the cities of most interest. This page lists a dozen, although some of them may be U.S. only: API Directory – ProgrammableWeb. Yahoo’s says it is for non-commercial purposes, but maybe there is a commercial license available on inquiry from Yahoo or some of the others.

          Hi Jefferson

Thanks for the great site, I am working on one of the links that give 500 free calls everyday which might just do it

I did to Rory, I should not have bothered responding to it, but there you go. Your excellent Custom format from Eileens is instrumental in making this work

Hang in there B. Bunter Esq. I am sure someone will come up with a scheme that will assist you.

      Here’s my attempt:

Have you tried any airline/travel weather sites? For example, if you select “current weather” and then a region (eg “Great Britian”), then “table” on the following web page, you can opt to display a tabular list of selectable aspects such as temperature, wind, snow depth etc for a whole string of cities/towns for the selected region on the selected date at a chosen time:

      http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/ukukstdf.htm

Edit: The same web site allows similar data for the whole of Europe and, indeed for the whole world, to be displayed.

Note that time for all regions is displayed as BST (British Summer Time???) You may have to convert to UTC or whatever you need as applicable

You can bookmark the web page and then refresh it everytime you want the latest updates.

(Incidentally, you will be pleased to note it is a UK web site!!)

      Hi Peter

Thank you for the link, I have actually emailed this site for further information or a paid subscription. Whilst it is indeed an excellent site when you do a web query from within Excel you need to select the tables on the page and on this site it does not do it for the sub pages, for example it lists all of Europe in a table which you can select but if you choose ‘East’ and then ‘Russia’ for example it has a huge list but you can’t select it.

Another wonderful resource that I am waiting to here back from is Weather Underground (Wunderground) http://www.wunderground.com/ and if you then type a country into the search and scroll to the bottom of the page, for example, Vietnam, http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=vietnam&searchType=WEATHER you get a table that works well in a web queery.

My concerns though are that as there are 225 Countries that we can potentially ship to and from I would have to make 235 web queeries in the same workbook which (a) will take some time each time the workbook is opened, (b) use lots of recsources on the owners site, and (c) may need the site owners to believing that a ‘bot’ of some sort was hitting and then they would lock it down making it unusuable for others that enjoy to use it.

Thanks again for your great suggestion

@B. Bunter Esq: A complex requirement, indeed! Good luck (please post back to the Lounge once you find a solution). All the best.

This post is a nasty reply to an innocent request, and honestly, I don’t know what prompted you to write this. There are plenty of places you can be a nasty troll on the internet, but this isn’t one of them.

Don’t show up again in this thread, peterg. Thanks.

      Back on topic folks, sorry.

I see peterg’s post has been removed (by the moderators?). Let’s now keep to the spirit of the thread (and indeed the mature attitude of the Lounge) and leave further criticism out.
