OK – I may be worrying about nothing, however I would appreciate some advice. I have a file called wbemcore.log in my C:WINNTsystem32wbemLogs folder, and it has been filled up over recent months with the rather worrying message “(Tue Aug 14 08:31:18 2001) : Core physically unloaded!”
There appears to be hundreds of these messages – (all different dates of course) and I have no idea what the message means – but I think you will agree it sounds a tad suspicious!

Any thoughts from the loungers?

If it’s any consolation, I did a search and found the same log file full of similar messages (and more than a few identical) to yours. I don’t think my system is running any errors, so my advice would be : don’t worry. I haven’t the slightest idea what it is either, but a core unload seems to be a common event. Whatever it was its source, I didn’t do it today – yet.

Wow, you talk about a piece that’s hard to find information on. Like MerC I have the same log file on all my 2000 (and some NT) machines. It appears to be linked to Windows Managemnt Instrumentation (WMI) – which is itself somewhat of a mystery to most. There is an EXE file called….you guessed it, WBEMCORE.EXE.

I’ll leave it to the othier loungers to add more detail on what exactly is performed by all of this.

After looking at the dates and times of the entries in the log on my laptop, it appears to me that the dates relate to a shutdown. I do not shut down my laptop during the week (I usually hibernate) and the entries are mostly on the weekend when I would do some sort of maintainance (boot time defrag, etc) or something as an Administrator. You may wish to keep a paper log of the dates and times that you shut down and the times you boot up for a couple of days or a week and then compare them with the wbemcore.log in your computer.

WMI is a very useful API, part of the OS.
