• Wanted: Effects Tab (XP-SP1)

I wanted to turn off menu and window animation and found to my surprise no more Effects on my Display Properties.

Now I’m not sure if the missing Effects tab is a specific XP topic and if it doesn’t rather belong to General Widows Solutions, as I found this KB Article (194148 – “Effects Tab Missing in Display Properties Dialog Box”) which suggests it is wandering about since Windows 95-98.

However, having caved in to gentle persuasion and having installed all the last patches and updates, I wonder if I’m not starting to pay the price. Is anyone else experiencing this tab evanescence ?

I turned off the animations using TweakUI, but nevertheless I’d like to know what happened to my tab.

    Thank you,
    Oana

That article only mentions Windows 98, so I’m not sure it applies to XP.

Look on the right hand side of the Appearance tab for an Effects… button. Is that the one you want?

Not exactly. It hasn’t got the options to activate or deactivate menu or windows animations.

      Oana–

I haven’t found a specific fix but something for you to check. You mean the Effects button on the Appearances tab of Display Proerties dialogue box?

There is a registry key and values worth checking, and since mine is okay, the default value here seems to be 0.

      Look at

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPolicies
      System]

      Value Name: NoDisplayAppearancePage

      Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

Check to make sure your value is 0 here.

Also check all your video card driver.

        S, thank you.
I have the Effects button on the Appearances Tab, I was looking for a full-fledged Effects Tab, but that was probably just a Windows 98 souvenir in my imagination.
The Effects button doesn’t have the options I was looking for, but I solved the problem by using TweakUI.
