I’m a nerd, not an athlete. It’s always a relief to me the hype ends.

I find Tor Browser very good for watching foreign content, alas not for the BBC which seems to be at “war” with any one wanting to watch UK content abroad. The UK has a quaint system called a TV Licence to watch and strangely stream UK content in the UK, not sure how it works now, but, many years ago, they used to have vans racing round the streets tracking down unlicenced viewing. There’s probably folks round here who could bring me up to date as its been nearly 30 years since I actually lived there.

Sky content from the UK is availble through TOR, the web adress evades me as I am on the road right now but theres a web page that streams BBC content, it has to be refreshed every hour.

I do believe as VPN’s tend to use an exit node in the UK the long term reliability isnt that good, for example if the exit node is 192.168.0.1 (its a for example I know its a local network number) and maybe it connects to the “Beeb” once or twice a year then instantly theres a few hundred thousand connections, it sort of gives the game away i.e. more than an average “block of flats.”

Your safe Susan I am sure its only in the confines of the UK  or costal limits of 12 miles, were you could well find your self in “the magistrates.”

If you configure your TORRC in notepad like this:

      # This file was generated by Tor; if you edit it, comments will not be preserved
      # The old torrc file was renamed to torrc.orig.1, and Tor will ignore it

      ClientOnionAuthDir C:\Users\Bob\Tor Browser\Browser\TorBrowser\Data\Tor\onion-auth
      DataDirectory C:\Users\Bob\Tor Browser\Browser\TorBrowser\Data\Tor
      GeoIPFile C:\Users\Bob\Tor Browser\Browser\TorBrowser\Data\Tor\geoip
      GeoIPv6File C:\Users\Bob\Tor Browser\Browser\TorBrowser\Data\Tor\geoip6
      EntryNodes {ca} StrictNodes 1
      ExitNodes {gb} StrictNodes

Entry node {ca} set to Canada, Exit node set to {gb}  obviously in the US you would set {us} where you want to enter or exit. You can find a list of country codes here, and of course you want to appear elsewhere then you set your entry mode accordingly, although the signal\network connection will have to traverse the net to find the entry point ergo slower. Might not be the best and its really what the network wasnt exactly set up for streaming, but you can watch quite a bit of UK. C4, ITV 1-3 content that doesent make it on to BBC world and all gloriously free. 🙂

The BBC is still paid for through an annual licence fee, which for me is not a lot more than my monthly Sky subscription. Because it is funded by a fee, the BBC’s  TV and radio services are entirely devoid of advertising breaks – which are bad enough on the commercial UK channels but I believe far more intrusive in the US. I don’t believe there are still vans going around tracking non-payers.

There are numerous other paid-for channels in the UK, such as Netflix, Prime, Apple TV etc. While the BBC funding model is always being debated by politicians when in Opposition, when in Government they never seem to want to do anything to change it. My personal opinion is that it represents good value for money and I’d hate to go down the alternative advertising route for the BBC’s funding.

Thx for confirming that, I have spent near enough 30 years, when a conversational subject moves on to TV, explaining, to incredulous listeners, that indeed you do need a licece to watch TV in the UK. Curiously just had 3 months over there, glad to see, is it called “Freeview?” Has way more channels than when I last lived over there, It was only Beeb 1,2, ITV, & C4 seem to remember having Sky on satellite, and thier news and stuff was pretty good back then, hence I still grab the news from them.

Seems unbelievable now. Now we just have “Robbin Rogers” the cable company these days

Nah, the primary sports this year seem to be in competive pandering, beginning with the opening.  As an aging nerd, I am always baffled, not so much that people devote so much of their productive lives on what are by definition games, but that anybody else really cares.

I used to enjoy watching the Olympics when they represented a clean and amateur sporting competition. Nowadays they are neither of those things, and I no longer have any interest in them.

When the opening ceremony includes a drag parody of the Last Supper, that’s it for me. No more Olympics.

Im in u.k. seen a bit of olympics coverage on bbc. Not so bothered really, opening ceremony was utter rubbish. Me, my missus, my elderly parents and various friends all commented on how cheap, weird and pretty rubbish the opening ceremony was. But this is just our opinions.

Not just your opinions. My wife’s too! I didn’t watch it other than when she called me to look at a particular moment or two. While the media headlines were hugely positive, once you got down to the tv critics’ reviews they were highly critical.

Everybody commenting on this thread seems to be against fun and entertainment and sports. I know the average Ask Woody subscriber is 70 years old but still !!!! Have some fun and levity before you all die ! There are other things to enjoy in life besides bitching against Windows 24/7. The Paris opening ceremony was a mix bag, with a few nice touches, but seeing the fantastic architecture along the Seine was worth it. Beautiful city.

While it’s possible to view international programming via tunneling/vpn/proxy/tor/etc., the legal/licensing restrictions often prohibit its viewing outside the region for which it is licensed — which can be annoying.

For viewers in the US, NBCUniversal has the rights for 2024 Summer Olympic Coverage.

For me personally, I don’t mind watching the olympics — but I agree that the NBC commentators talk wayyyyy too much. And I don’t want to waste time watching weird opening/closing ceremonies.  I only to watch the athletes perform, not listen to interviews or stories.

While it’s nice to see the US athletes perform, I’d also like to see ALL the other country’s athletes perform. IMO It was better when all the major broadcasting organizations covered the olympics concurrently.  Also, I don’t really care to watch paid professionals (e.g. NBA) playing in the olympics.

In summary, I don’t mind watching the olympics to admire the abilities of so many talented athletes — but I don’t care enough to pay for a streaming service or watch weird intermissions.

To watch *only* the Olympics I yesterday floated the cheap-o $8 monthly, cancellable Peacock subscription. Watched some Women’s Surfing yesterday. The high divers are also one of my faves.

Dood. I send you an air-five for that one! Plus, it has been long enough since the Mute button became standard equipment on TV remotes. 😁

I’m trying out the BBC coverage tonight because I find the folks on American shows just talk over everything and are slightly annoying.

Susan, Thanks a lot for voicing exactly what I was feeling! Glad to know I wasn’t the only one!! LOL

Yes, The NBC broadcast is annoyingly “over produced” – meaning too much trying to make it into more than it really is. Just show what’s going on and keep the chatter to a minimum!

NBC is highly focused on what I like to call “celebrity-ism” = to get maximum ratings, use as many celebrates as possible – even though they have NOTHING to do with the Olympics or Sports. (i.e. Beyonce trotting around in a swimsuit with USA on it.) Pointless nonsense.

The best stories of the Olympics often come from the smaller countries whose athletes have often had to overcome greater obstacles just to get there. But yet again, there were the NBC talking heads – jabbering about some non-sequitur about a celebrity – while numerous small countries’ boats passed by in the parade. Not even mentioning those countries names.

Concerning the “weirdness” seen. Isn’t that just the French being French? 😀
