Many of you are asking me what kind of Chromebook I would buy, right now. If I could, I would wait a couple more months because the holidays are comin

I’ve owned a couple cheap Samsung Chromebooks. Neither impressed me as anymore then a cheap netbook locked to Google. The more expensive ones look nice, but I have become less and less trusting in Google products. Android apps have been delayed so long on Chrome OS and frankly how many actually support bigger screens is the question? I remember how bad IOS apps looked on iPads that were only iPhone apps.  I also tried a Chromebox because I had a idle 22″ monitor and that was probably my best experience with a Chrome device. I just never liked the 11 to 13″ notebooks which most Chromebooks are. Acer does a 15″ Chromebook which get’s good reviews but make sure to get 4GB RAM. I’ll most likely stick with Windows 10 simply because of the flexibility and besides, you can run Chrome browser and most Google services on a Windows PC.

(Awaiting moderation) I am using a Samsung Chromebook 3, and being my first CB it has been flawless. In fact it just today updated to Chrome 61+. I will be looking for a bigger screen soon as I will need to replace my Win7 machine Woody has helped keep running for years. I will certainly check out he one recommended by Woody. Waiting for a Woody book on Chromebook for You :).

      Nice thought!

What I’d really like to write is “Chromebook For Windows Nerds For Dummies”

Woody – Have you tried Gallium OS?

I like the Chromebook hardware, but I’m not fond of Google’s closed ecosystem or spying, so last Christmas I decided to use my septuagenarian parents as guinea pigs.  I bought them an Acer Chromebook 14 (Edgar) and put Gallium OS on it for them.  A bit of instructions on use, software repositories, and updates and they’ve been happy Gallium OS users for almost a year now.  I tested it for about a week before gifting it and it was very functional.  Gallium OS doesn’t seem to be as well optimized for battery life as Chrome OS, probably due to cloud based services, but they still have 8+ hours.

I’d be interested in your thoughts.

I’ve never tried Gallium. Looks like I should add it to the list…

It’s essentially Xubuntu adapted and optimized for the Chromebook hardware.  Simple and fast, but fully functional.  Just something to mention to people looking to leave the MS mothership, but not wanting to call another mothership home.
