• Want to be rid of Java, again

Having read the dire warnings of doomsday scenarios, or were they zero-day scenarios, I’d just like to be rid of Java. So I went trawling the Web, found “How to disable Java in your browsers” at InfoWorld Tech Watch. Seems authoritave, but I can’t get to first base. I have no Java icon in Control Panel. Following the instructions I double-clicked Javacpl.exe. Got an error message, “Could not open C:…Java…jvm.cfg”

Read some more, but got bogged down in jargon, “front end” & “Client-side,” give me a break, what’s difference? Should I care?

So what’s the next move? Can I delete the whole Java folder and then use jv16 to clean up the garbage left in the registry?

    Suggestions much appreciated.

I wrote too soon! I followed the instructions on the Java Website, it simply said to use Control Panel > Uninstall. That’s what I did, and it seemed to work, but… When I looked in Program Files there was the Java folder, alive and well, 750KB of it. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, if Sun can’t write safe code why would one expect them to write a good uninstall? So now I’ll try the JavaRA

The folder may still have a few things there after an uninstall. That’s why I use CCleaner registry cleaner after an uninstall. You do have to be careful what you delete, but CCleaner does a great job cleaning up after an uninstall.

This is the Java that is showing up on my computer.

jre-windows-i586 It is located in c:program filesjava It has 15.5 MB created on 5.21.10 . It is not showing up in Control Panel > Programs Site says to remove

older versions say way as the newer versions and I can’t.

Will CCleaner registry cleaner work to get rid of this Java or will I have to use SingularLabs’ JavaRa?

        Thanks…………..Glenda

If Java is not installed you can just delete the folder. It is most likely just remnants from a prior install. The Java uninstaller seldom cleans up everything.

On several machines, I simply used the regular Windows Control Panel Add/Remove to uninstall Java.
After a reboot, I looked into the contents of the Java folder, and decided to delete the folder.
So now, JavaRa does not find anything to do.
By the way, I did that sometime last year, and all machines are running fine.

I’ve uninstalled everything Java I can find on my computer, using all of the recommended solutions. Searching my computer for Java finds nothing. However, in both SeaMonkey and Firefox browsers, when I check add-ins, it still shows Java Deployment Toolkit. How do I get rid of that? Thanks in advance for your help.

Try using JavaRa, then use CCleaner. I also think CCleaner would work.

    • #1370393

CCleaner has general knowledge of almost everything that can be installed and what can be removed.
CCleaner will NEVER remove JAVA as a normal action.
The best it can achieve is to provide a shortcut to the same JAVA “uninstall” that is accessed via Windows Control Panel Program Features,
and then it can take pot-shots at registry keys residues that it might notice

JavaRA is specifically designed for the sole purposes of :-
Removing obsolete but still exploitable remnants of Java without damaging the latest JAVA,
AND EVEN BETTER – eradicating the entire infestation by Java of all files, folders, and registry keys.

I removed Java from my PC using the free version of “Revouninstaller” as it allows for a thorough clean including all the registry items and folders involved.

There are times however that Revo Uninstaller does not catch everything. I use the Pro edition of Revo. I just uninstalled 2 apps, using Revo Uninstaller in the Advanced Scan mode, and still found 2 entries for both using the registry cleaner portion of CCleaner.

Sometimes NONE of the above works (see my post “Please help! I can’t uninstall Java”, in the XP forum). Then you need to bite the bullet and do a manual uninstall, including manually cleaning the registry. Not for the timid, but it’s the only thing that worked for me.

Thanks Gentlemen for all your information. I need to absorb all this and see what I can do to get rid of the 15 MB leftover.

Joe you may right on the money. I will try that first.

Has anyone here used “SlimCleaner”? If so what do you think? It’s free.

        Thanks again

      From: http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-issues-with-plugins-fix-problems#w_manually-uninstalling-a-plugin

      Manually uninstalling a plugin

If you can’t use an uninstaller program to remove a plugin, you can remove it manually:
      1.
In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter.
      ◦ The about:config “This might void your warranty!” warning page may appear. Click I’ll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page.

      2. Search for the preference: plugin.expose_full_path.
      3. Double-click on the plugin.expose_full_path preference in the list to change the value to true.
      4. Enter about:plugins into the Location bar to display the About Plugins page.
      5. Each entry in the About Plugins page will have “File name:” followed by a path. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder shown for the plugin you want to remove.
      6. Rename the file to something other than its normal name – e.g. npswf32 becomes Xnpswf32
      7. Double-click on the plugin.expose_full_path preference in the list on the about:config page to change the value back to false to avoid exposing the plugin path to websites.

      The plugin will be removed.

Thanks, Jerry. But that didn’t work. When I go through all that, there is no java anything listed.

    • #1374255

Then just disable the plug in and forget it.
