The loss of an American icon with an international reputation:
Cronkite remembered as ‘honorable’ and ‘an icon’
A quote from that story:
Cronkite was the broadcaster to whom the title “anchorman” was first applied, and he became so identified in that role that his name became the term for it in other languages. (Swedish anchors are known as Kronkiters; in Holland, they are Cronkiters.)

So sad – when I was little I wished he was my dad. At least he was an adult I could trust. When something happened and my parents got upset, I always ran to the t.v. when Walt was on to get the real scoop.

Now I tweet, but it’s not the same as “Dad” reading the news to me……

I was also a great fan of Mr. Cronkite’s when I was a child growing up. I can honestly say that he was solely responsible for me becoming a news addict. You could always count on him and “Huntley & Brinkley” for good news reporting.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people that are now trying to re-write his legacy. Pity we always seem to want to deconstruct people after thye are dead.

I don’t want to diminish the stature of the late mr. Cronkite in any way, but I’ve never heard the term “cronkiter” in The Netherlands.

Accoarding to http://wordie.org/words/cronkiter, cronkiter is used in Sweden.

That is quote possible – perhaps Argus can comment on that. But I’m certain it isn’t used in The Netherlands.

Hans, Here in Switzerland a few of the older (45+) people have heard of him, but he isn’t that well known. The youngsters ….

I grew up in Canada, saw the moon-landing, remember JFK’s assassination, with Mr. Cronkite doing the reporting so I am aware of the icon that he was in North America – but not so much over here. Hopefully Argus will arrive and give us his typically Swedish view …

The loss of an American icon with an international reputation:

It’s a shame he couldn’t have of hung on a little longer. I’ve just been watching “In the Shadow of the Moon” a documentary film on the Apollo astronauts (centring on the Apollo 11 crew). Mr Cronkite of course featured in it in the film clips.
