W98 Protection Error

I have a friend with two computers both of which report the followng on boot-up:

Windows protection error while initializing device: CONFIGMG

So far he can only operate in Safe mode and has lost all internet connections other than e-mail via dial up to AOL.

I found only one article in the MC Knowledge Base, but it was no help. We did discover that both systems are missing the CONFIGMG file.

Any suggestions?

I suspect you mean CONFIGMG.VXD?
A google search found this explanation http://tweakhomepc.virtualave.net/update/vmm32vxd.html%5B/url%5D and an article (in German) http://www.wintotal.de/Tipps/Eintrag.php?RBID=2&TID=475%5B/url%5D showing the extraction command as “extract I:win98win98_45.cab configmg.vxd c:”

Note on my Win98SE the file is ONLY in the directory “c:windowssysbackup”

I guess my hardware doesn’t need it.
