    Greetings,

I have a Win10 Pro desktop, 22H2, 19045.4529. It is not used for weeks at a time, and I typically patch only after Susan give the OK.

No cumulative updates will install after June. In Windows Update, when I click Install, the thermometer runs to 20 percent, stalls, then eventually reports error 0x800F0831. Checking the System log in eventvwr, I see “Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8024200B.”

I tried downloading the August update from the Catalog, then applying it with WUSA. That thermometer moves a short distance, stalls, then eventually gives up. Neither the built-in Update Troubleshooter nor advice from any reputable forums has helped, nor has sfc.

    Any ideas?

The best fix would be to run repair/install.

I’m with Alex.  I’ve done several repair installs with 100% success on each one.

      Desktop mobo Asus TUF X299 Mark 1, CPU: Intel Core i7-7820X Skylake-X 8-Core 3.6 GHz, RAM: 32GB, GPU: Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti 4GB. Display: Four 27" 1080p screens 2 over 2 quad.

The repair install, which took about twice a long as a bare-metal OS installation, fixed the update problem. But what could go wrong when you have to use a sledgehammer when tweezers should do? For one thing, the PC was stuck at 1024×768 resolution though it runs the latest video driver.

My successful “repair install” was to put the old Win81 drive back in. Works fine. This machine doesn’t need a network connection as it’s a one-trick pony to run an old scanner.
