Using shell:startup, I placed shortcuts for three apps into my Startup folder. Two start every time I boot and one–Speedfan–never does. All three start just fine manually.

I’m at a loss as to what might be going on here; has anybody else experienced and resolved this issue?

Welcome, have you checked the Start settings of the driver(s), speedfan.sys (giveio.sys) in Device Management? You’ll probably need to enable hidden/non-plug and play driver to see it, Properties > Driver tab.

Fire up Task Manager and go to the start up section to see what is listed.

      cheers, Paul

Thanks for the quick responses… my replies:

        1. satrow: I didn’t know that Device Manager had anything to do with application software; please explain.

        2. Paul T: Speedfan is listed as “Enabled” in Task Manager.

        3. b: Initially I had Speedfan starting on a scheduled task, but, for some reason, I disabled it and went to the Start folder approach. I’ll reinstate the scheduled task.

        Thanks to all!!

Because SpeedFan causes a UAC prompt when started, I think it can only be automatically started via a shortcut to a scheduled task:
