Volume Shadow Copy error: Incorrect Function

I have copied GFI Backup Freeware from my XP system to Win 8.1 Pro 64bit.

All seems to work well. However, inspection of the run logs shows the error “Volume Shadow Copy error: Incorrect Function.

Unfortunately GFI discontinued this product 1st Jan 2013 – and are now unable to support the product. I’m unable to discover if the product has been sold to any other manufacturer.

I should be loathe to cease using GFI Backup. So are there any suggestions for investigation/repair. I have copy across “vss.dll repair tool” from Windows Techies (http://www.windowstechies.com). How might approach using this tool?

It seems dangerous to me to use an orphaned program for a function as important as backup, especially if it is not playing nicely with Windows. I am currently using the Windows 8.1 built in “File History” function for ongoing data file backup and “Macrium Reflect Free edition” for weekly image backups and it is working nicely.
