Wasn’t sure which section to put this in, but can be moved if the wrong one.

I was getting this error after creating a system image onto a Seagate 1TB external HDD.

Having checked out the HDD with Seatools for Windows I contacted Seagate and their tech took me through Diskpart, a wipe and a quick format and said if it happened again to contact them where they issued a RMA and they sent me a Recertified HDD, but I’m continuing to get this error.

I’ve run a batch file I found online to re-register the VSS as well as setting it to Started and Auto, but the error persists.

I would assume Seagate checked out the HDD before they sent me it and I gave it a quick format NTFS when I got it.

I’m also getting 5 consecutive entries of Disk Event ID 11 prior to the volsnap error which I was also getting prior to the RMA.

I’ve Googled both these errors but haven’t come up with a fix, so thought I’d ask on here.

I’ve considered taking it in under extended warranty, but they’ll probably just factory reset it which I think they did last time when I took it in, as one Google suggestion said it could be a mobo problem.

“The driver detected a controller error on DeviceHarddisk1DR1″

Check/replace the drive data cable. Try a different SATA port.

(A full NTFS format on the recertified drive would have been better.)

I got a brand new cable with the replacement Seagate and had swapped it with that of another Seagate prior to the RMA and it made no difference and this is a laptop.

I haven’t tried it in the other USB port, but my wireless mouse works fine which is plugged into there.

When I first bought the 1TB HDD I gave it a full format and it took about 18hrs – didn’t really fancy doing that again 🙂

It doesn’t produce those errors on my other Win 7 laptop.

So it’s a problem with the USB controller in this notebook only?

Most likely the “Event ID: 11” errors are being detected by the laptop’s SATA driver rather than the USB driver.

I think that’s included in the AMD drivers as it’s an AMD SATA Controller, but I’ve tried reinstalling it through Device Manager/Update driver/Browse my computer/Let me choose from list and neither have made any difference.

I’ve attached what the video driver download installed.

Can you re-post that link so that I can check out the f/w.

Anyway, it’s after 02:15 now and I’m off to roost.

If the link in my #8 post doesn’t work for you then try entering http://www.seagate.com in your browser’s address bar – it should take you to Seagate’s UK Home page.

Thanks, but it doesn’t look like I’ll need it.

I’ve ID’d it as the USB port.

I opened Event Viewer, plugged in the Seagate and hit the Refresh and immediately 5 instances of Disk ID 11 popped up.

I plugged it into the other port and did the same and no errors popped up.

Tried the USB receiver in that port and it wouldn’t load the driver with a number of USB Receiver yellow alerts in Device Manager.

I’ll be taking it in under extended warranty later this week, but at least I’ve now been able to create a system image by plugging it into the other port.

      …Seagate 1TB external HDD…The driver detected a controller error on DeviceHarddisk1DR1…

Go to Seagate.com (I can’t find a link for Seagate’s UK website as no matter what I enter Seagate’s AU website is loaded), hover over “Support” in the menu bar then click on “Downloads”.

On the right-hand side of the “Downloads” page you should see:

Enter the HDD’s serial number then click on “Find Firmware”. If updated firmware is found for your HDD then you will need to follow the instructions to download and install it.

“Firmware” is software installed on the HDD’s “Printed Circuit Board” (PCB), similar to a computer’s BIOS/UEFI software.

I have dealt with a few dozen Seagate HDDs (mostly 500GB to 2TB) that were being detected as having repeating “Event ID: 11” errors that were fixed by upgrading the firmware.

Best, if you can, disconnect all other HDDs but the target HDD from the computer while you upgrade the firmware (just in case).

I’ve downloaded the AMD Video drivers which has the South Bridge which looks after the USBs and that made no difference, but I’ll try it in the other USB port tomorrow – a bit late now.

I would have thought as the replacement was Recertified it would have the latest f/w but your link doesn’t work for me to check out.

The Seagate tech didn’t mention anything about upgrading the f/w.

This laptop only has two USB ports and my wireless mouse is plugged into the other, so no way of plugging anything else in other than the target HDD.

…but your link doesn’t work for me to check out…

The Seagate AU downloads page is at http://www.seagate.com/au/en/support/by-topic/downloads/

Maybe after you click that it will detect you are in the UK and re-direct you?

You could do the firmware upgrade with the USB HDD plugged in to your laptop, but be very sure you select the correct HDD (normally after you boot from the firmware upgrade media it will automatically detect the correct HDD).

I’ve run a batch file I found online to re-register the VSS as well as setting it to Started and Auto

VSS should be set to manual start and logon as Local System. It is only run on request.

      cheers, Paul

VSS should be set to manual start and logon as Local System. It is only run on request… Paul

The “Event ID: 11” errors Sudo15 is seeing may but not necessarily arise when VSS runs. More likely the “Event ID: 11” errors occur intermittently when the system attempts to access the problem HDD.

    • #1569443

I only changed the VSS to started and auto as part of trouble shooting and now that I’ve ID’d the cause, I’ve changed it back to Manual.

It looks like I have a similar problem with one of the ports on my other laptop, so that one will be going in as well.
