    Hi,

Has anybody had experience with VI vs ASP or other technologies?

I’ve been doing bits and pieces of asp, JScript and VB (with ADO) for some time, and I’m quite comfortable with them. Elsewhere on my site, people are looking at Interdev. I don’t know much about how they fit in, but I’ve heard that there’s not a lot of use for VI if ASP is used- except as a nice editing/debugging tool.

    Any thoughts please?

In a sense, Visual Interdev is just Front Page for web programmers. You use Visual Interdev to develop/write your ASP pages. I remember an instructor for an ASP presentation/seminar say to create your pretty web pages in Front Page then import the site into Visual Interdev to do the ASP scripting. Does that answer your question? shrug

        It makes some sense, thanks.

        Have you used VI?

I’ve used it a little bit, and I’ve attended a presentation/seminar on the topic. A co-worker uses it all the time, and he likes it. Dreamweaver Ultradev is Macromedia’s answer to Visual Interdev. I’ve heard it’s good too.

Have you tried Microsofts Script Editor ?
MSE.exe – buried deep, deep in the Visual Studio folder.
I did use a text editor that could recognise html and asp but it was a little hit and miss. MSE however has text colouring and ‘intelitype'(?) like VB and I use it all the time now.
MSE ships with Office 2000 products and VS, give it a try, you may like it – hey its free too !!!!!

        Father Jack,

It sounds interesting. But I don’t have the full Visual Studio, just VB6. And I can’t find mse.exe anywhere.

OK, I’ve found it- on the O2K Install- seeThe Microsoft site

Have you got it going ?
i had to re-install OL2K – our only office2K product to get it functioning properly but it was worth the time spent.

Sorry for the late reply. I don’t come into this forum often.

Yes, I have got it going, and it works well.

It’s got some very nice features, and it makes life heaps easier.

              My only two quibbles are:

.Once I click on the preview tab, I can’t undo. When I was using a straight text editor, I could continue to undo as far as I liked, no matter whether I saved or not
.The preview is a discouragement to save. I have to force myself to save regularly.

But it’s a great tool, and I use it all the time now. Thanks for pointing me in that direction!
