    Hi, all:
my first post to this forum.. any way… I bought a PC with Vista home premium last week and wanted to know about recommended antivirus…I just deleted MacAfee because I found it to be incredibly annoying aflame (good idea?) I was reading a book about Vista, I believe by Woody and he recommended a free program.. Was it Avast ? I saw it mentioned in another thread. My previous Pc had software that came with my DSL connection(ATT & Yaho0) but they do not have something ready for Vista yet..
    thanks in advance cheers

      Welcome to the Lounge.

AVG Anti-virus is free for private, non-commercial, single home computer use and is compatible with Vista. I have been using it on Vista for about 1 month and have had no problems.

Getting rid of McAfee was a good idea at least in my mind. Almost as good as getting rid of Norton!
I’ve been using Avast for a while now and it works fine for me.

The note below is from the Avast website:
We are glad to announce that the latest versions of all avast! antivirus editions, including the free Home Edition, now support the new Windows Vista platform (both 32-bit and 64-bit builds).

The free version of Avast can be downloaded at: AVAST AV

How do you guys feel Avast compares to McAfee or Norton or the other big ones? Does it keep you as up to date with virus updates? What other programs should you install along with Avast to be protected for spyware and all that? I need software programs that are compatible with Windows Vista Home Basic. Would appreciate your opinions, thanks.

I second DaveA’s vote regarding McAfee & Norton.

Beside the Avast AV, go for the highly popular Zone Alarm firewall, Spybot S&D and AdAware SE for malware and such. All free

            • #1065553

ZoneAlarm does not yet have an officially released product that supports Vista.

That is why I am running OneCare. When we fist set our first Vista machine and then the two new laptops, there were NO AV or firewall products that were Vista Ready except for OneCare.

Okay, so what would software would be compatible together and give me thorough protection for Windows Vista? Thanks you guys for the input.

If you want to keep it simple, follow DaveA’s recommendation and use Windows Live OneCare from Microsoft. It provides all necessary protection (firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware) in one integrated package, so you won’t have to worry about compatibility. There are no doubt stronger individual components, but OneCare should be adequate. It’s not free, though.

I agree with Hans, as time goes by more and more software OEM’s are getting their products updated. It just takes time, remember that Vista is a BIG change from the earlier versions.

I will be installing Vista on my desk top before long as a second OS, and will be trying out some of these updated utils and protection programs, most of which will be the free ones.

Some other non-free products now indicate a Vista certification or compatibility claim:

Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 (formerly PC-cillin Internet Security)

Panda Internet Security 2007 (as of 5/7/07)

I also checked Kaspersky, F-Prot, and F-Secure (Vista Support coming soon).

I use Avast (with XP) and it downloads updates several times a day, so no problems with keeping up to date.

I can’t answer as to what other programs you could use with it on Vista, but no doubt others can. However, I use MS Windows Defender which seems to work quite well and I assume that MS will have made sure it is compatible with Vista.

I use AVG free and Windows Defender and the built-in firewall in my Vista Home Basic…since the middle of March. Everything is perfect, as far as I’m concerned.

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable – see Help 19)

Since installing Vista Ultimate, it was hard finding a protection program, so I installed Windows One Care from MS, thinking it had to work and be integrated properly into Windows.

Very recently, in one of the computer magazines, I saw a rating of all the programs. This was done by an independent “organization.” The link to the site: http://www.av-comparatives.org[/url%5D. The article said that in the future this organization was not even going to be rating the MS program because its performance was so poor. While I have not yet had a problem with the MS product – I am taking no chances and will install a different program.

Many of the programs are now Vista compatible (recent releases) including the ones mentioned above in this thread and Kaspersky and G Data. There are probably others, too. Many are free to home users. Check out the link.

Anything would be better than either McAfee or Norton.

On my Vista machines we are using OneCare from Microsoft and does a good job.
It includes a firewall that is better than the Vista built in one.
