    G’day,

I’m trying to use Visio 2010’s “Home Plan” template to plan where to put my furniture before I start unpacking lots of boxes. I’m measure the inside of the flat, but Visio seems to be fighting me when it comes to exact dimensions, particularly with window and door locations, and with joining rooms using an open space.

I think I have three questions:

    1. How do I join two “rooms” together to create more complex and accurate shapes than the rather loose L and T shapes?  Or am I better off just creating every wall independently?
    2. How do I control the exact position of a window or door in the wall of a room or wall?
    3. What stencil item is intended to be used as a kitchen bench?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Until I get this thing drawn and try a few different combinations, I really won’t feel ready to start unpacking anything!

I’ll be honest with you, every time I’ve tried to use Visio for these things, I do a better job with graph paper from the store and cutting out “pretend” furniture.  In theory you should be able to drag the corners of the rooms together but I typically overshoot and end up messing it up.  With visio save often so you can undo.

Why not try Sweet Home 3D the free interior design application ?

I usually try to restrict how much different software is on my PC — hence the plan to use Visio.

But the 3D walk-through of Sweet Home does look interesting.

I’d still like to find a Visio expert somewhere…

Im not an expert, but I work vith visio when drawing our IT topology, here is my personal opinion.

      1) Personally, I would join those two objects by moving them next to each other. Note: moving objects with CTRL pressed makes copy of the moved object, so you wont lose original. Move new objects to blank area. Then you could overdraw border lines of this newly created object and delete old ones.
      2) If you zoom in, moving objects is more smooth, more accurate. Hold SHIFT while moving objects in one axis direction. You can move only X or Y axis while holding SHIFT. That will make you move window in just one axis.
      3) I have a lot of stencils, I think it really depends on you. There is “bathroom and kitchen” in the “maps and plans”>”biulding plans”
I placed the workbench beside double sink and it looks like this. Also “furniture” offers some usefull pre*defined options (such as the “working table”/”workbench”)

PS – sorry I dont know exact names, because I run czech version of Visio 2010 😉
