Ironicly, while reading my local paper online this morning this popped up.
It shut my browser down and left only the popup on the screen.

I used Task Manager to shut it down, did a scan and nothing was found.

And, this happened on a trusted site I use every day…Go figure…

Good choice to use Task Manager. Many of these nefarious warnings have the X close button programmed as the OK button. The best and safest way is to use Task Manager to close them.

This was discussed in another thread…

Sometimes when reading the Drudge report which is all links, I get a popup when using the back arrow saying ‘ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO NAVIGATE AWAY FROM THIS PAGE’

Of course I use Task Manager…It’s really the safest way to close those types of things…

Oh well, everyone is out to get me just because I’m paranoid…

So which security scan(s) did you run ? As far as I am concerned, the only “trusted” sites are security company’s websites .

    • #1267300

      I ran MSE and Malarebytes..
I wasn’t too concerned about getting infected because I shut it down with task manager.

Sure, security sites are great but they don’t have the local news…

I’ve not see that particular notification before. Very subtle and low key. Very rude of it to interrupt newspaper time.

      You’re right Deadeye…
It’s more annoying because it was about 4AM and my coffee wasn’t even ready…

Darn, you hadn’t even had your coffee yet!:cheers: Here’s 2 mugs for tomorrow morning on me.

It looks like a browser redirect to a fake AV/AM scan. If you closed it out, you should be fine.

    • #1267396

      Yeah,that’s what it was Clint..

I don’t get many of these but I thought it kinda unusual that it shut down my browser and left only that message on my monitor.

    • #1267419

I’ve had similar ones where the page would redirect to a site that looks like an AV tool with an explorer type view of a phony drive letter tree, and a
moving progress bar. It’s not the most anoying browser redirect, but def in the top 2 or 3.

Did it originate from the website I was on when it happened ???

I did scans and wasn’t infected on my end.

If your paper was compromised, it could have been from their own site. But it also could have been from an ad in the page; publishers are at the mercy of ad networks to avoid malicious ads, and the ad networks sometimes fall down on the job.

      I think that’s what it was…
I never click on website ads..

After I checked my system and I went back on the site and it didn’t happen again…

      Oh well..

With a well designed malware delivery ad, you don’t need to click anything to get the popup. Unfortunately.

Oh they are really out to get us !

My wife was on a site and a scam AVG warning came up. She closed her laptop and waited for me to get home. I used ctrl alt delete and removed the popup which was similar to the one you got. Then I ran RKILL to make sure no trojan came with it. There were 2. It deleted them. Then I ran malwarebytes and removed the rest of the infections. Next I rebooted after turning on the boot scan that comes with AVASt and the laptop was clean.

RKILL is safe and free. Why don’t you run it and let us know if there is a trojan. It posts a log when it finishes.

I know I didn’t think there was one on the laptop.

      Thanks, I’ll try it.

I ran Rkill and got the following.
      Both items are false positives…

Processes terminated by Rkill or while it was running:
      C:UsersDominick7AppDataRoamingmjusbspmagicJack.exe
      C:WindowsSysWOW64InfDefaultInstall.exe
