I was sent several photos in the .MIX file format and have been unable to view them. I tried inserting a file into MSWord 2000 but was unable to do so. I also tried to insert in Paint without success. I understand that the MS app. “PIcture It” works but I don’t want to buy it.

Is there a viewer that I can download (free) that will let me see these photos?

    Thanks.

Unfortunately, there appear to be no freeware viewers for the .mix format. Popular viewers such as IrfanView don’t support it. This is because Microsoft has refused to release the file specification for general use. Picture It! and PhotoDraw, both from Microsoft, can view .mix files, as can ThumbsPlus (reputedly).

If you can post them some where, so I can download them, I have MS Digital Image 2006.

Can you email me at “Removed by MOD”?

            I really appreciate this.

You may want to edit your post and remove the e-mail address to prevent web-bots from finding it. A private message to DaveA (through the PostBox) is safe from those bots.

      Try this…. from here. HTH

“Need to convert .mix files to .jpg quickly and without needing PictureIt? I figured out the easiest way to do it:

      1. Have the said .mix file saved on your computer somewhere. “My Documents” is easy enough since it’ll only be temporary.

      2. Open up Microsoft Word and click on the “Insert” menu.

      3. Click on “Picture” and then “From File…”

      4. Find the .mix file that you have saved on your computer and insert it into the document. Now you should be able to view the image as a part of your Word document.

      5. Now, in order to save it as a jpeg, just go to the “File” menu and click on “Save As.”

      6. Save the document as a “Web Page” (again, let’s say in “My Documents”)

      7. You won’t notice anything different, but then go to where you saved the web page document (in this case, your “My Documents” folder) and you’ll see that there’s the web page file along with a folder titled “filename_files.” Open this folder and inside you’ll find the .mix image saved as a jpeg. Then feel free to rename the image and place it wherever you’d like.

Please note that this has only been tested on Windows XP Professional. If anyone can try this on other Windows formats and see if it works in more or less the same way, then please post your findings here.

      Hope this helps.”

This does not work. The dialogue “Convert for What” appears when I try to insert a picture in MS Word.

Seems DaveA is offering the best solution but I have a version of Picture It I can try for you if DaveA cant help

Download and install the Office File Converter Pack here. It will add the Picture It format to your list of formats to convert from in Word and then the Insert>Save as>HTML trick should work.

        • #1051475

I’m still trying to find a solution as to why this Office File Converter doesn’t seem to work for everyone who downloads it and came across this information further along in the thread I found the tip about the converter in. Second from last post on the page.

          “MAJOR PROBLEM DISCOVERED!

Someone sent me a .mix file to convert, and I could not. I got the message “An error occurred whil importing this file.” I tried my .mix file again, and it works. It seems that NOT ALL .MIX FILES ARE THE SAME! That would explain why there is so much confusion and so many conflicting success stories.”

So it appears that MS is diddling behind the scenes with this file format making it a hit or miss proposition when trying to open the files, even with the correct software. There are references in this thread to not being able to open .mix files created in Picture It ’99 with a newer version of Picture It and people installing the Office File Converter Pack are unable to open the .mix files they have while others report resounding success. shrug

Edited to add……… This is proported to have come from Microsoft Support Personel

“Usually, .mix files can be opened by Microsoft Picture It! Photo, Microsoft
Picture It! Publishing, or Microsoft Greetings. If you do not have these
programs installed in your system, you may try to upload these pictures to MSN
Photos. The Upload Tool used by MSN Photos will automatically convert the .mix
format to .jpg format. However, since currently there are several different
formats of .mix files (though they have suffix as .mix)
          , according to my
experience, not all the .mix pictures are supported to be added to MSN Photos.”

As an alternative to Doc Watson’s suggestion to use Word, I usually use PowerPoint for this purpose. All you need to do is insert a file into a PowerPoint slide, then select the insertion and choose “Save as Picture…” from the right-click options. You get a variety of image options. (I use PowerPoint 2002.)

I’ve never tried to do this with an MIX file, however, and nor have I attempted to compare the quality of the images produced using the two applications.
