That day, 16 July 1969, is memorable for me for more than one reason.

It was my first presentation of my postgraduate research to the other students and professors, and nobody came. Because everyone else was at home watching the TV coverage of the launch. It was also my birthday. Besides being the day Apollo 11 took off for the Moon. So a day to remember. Which, in retrospect and even at the time, I thought then as I think now, it was the day of only the beginning of a Moon shot still to really happen. If it was going to happen, something far from sure at the time.

To me the real thing was four days later, when I watched, in Sydney’s early morning, several hours after the landing, the TV transmission of the first walk by a human on the Moon. Then, yes, it had really happened. No accident of the many possible in such a dangerous journey was going to deny that achievement, that “leap for mankind.” How large a leap? We may find about in coming years, now that several space-faring nations have serious plans under way to go to the Moon and make a more permanent stay there than the few days the Apollo mission crews spent on it.
