I’ve been advised by another reader to submit this inquiry to this section so here goes; I have downloaded numerous videos [TV interviews] from and would dearly like to burn some of them to DVD so elderly housebound friends I visit every week (who do not have a computer) can watch them on TV thus help brighten up their long dreary days a little. To do this I understand that the video formats must be converted so I purchased “ConvertXtoDVD” but can’t get it to work despite the advertising claiming it is as easy as ABC and will convert almost any format. I was informed by a reader of this forum that the subject has been raised before so would appreciate it if someone can point me to the hyperlink # or perchance – as an alternative – there is some reader who lives near me whom I could contact by phone as I suspect “Hands On” or step by step instructions is the way forward for me. I am residing in the north of the UK. Thanks S Fox.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 13, 2007 at 4:49 pm #1079447If you were LOOKING for software, I would simply suggest you search The Lounge to see what you find. Since you already have something and are looking for guidance on how to use it, the only place I can find that software mentioned is here: post 635,016
I would also remind you to take a browse through The Lounge Rules about keeping things within the forums so others may benefit from what you learn, etc. What you do outside The Lounge is certainly your business but it would be helpful for all concerned if you share with all whatever you learn and one way to do that is via the forum threads.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 13, 2007 at 5:07 pm #1079448I had a look at the site you downloaded the clips from. If you saved the .WMV (Windows Media Player) versions, then the ConvertXtoDVD software should be able to combine them and burn the collection to a DVD. If you downloaded the .RM (Real Player) versions, the software might not recognize them. Can you describe the method you’re using and where/ how it fails?

AskWoody LoungerOctober 13, 2007 at 9:19 pm #1079470I’ll respond to posts 670712 / 13 together. I realize the policy of the forum is (by and large) to post to the forum so all can benefit from them but – seeing certain subscribers / experts – show their email addresses & are not averse to receiving the odd private email, surely it is not Anathema to occasionally resort to that form of communication.
I looked at the post #653016 and note that ConvertvtoDVD is shown as FREE but that is not the case here in the UK where it normally sells at £25 Sterling though I purchased it (less 30%) on special offer to readers of the “Computeractive” magazine. To Alan’s post regarding the hitches with ConvertXtoDVD I will have another go on Monday and see how far I get before the prompt message appears & what it says. I vaguely remember it saying the existing format was incompatible. S Fox -

…surely it is not Anathema to occasionally resort to that form of communication…
[/indent]It is not and I didn’t intend to sound harsh in my post. Many Loungers use PMs or emails to supplement their assistance to one another and there’s not a thing wrong with that. I only wanted to encourage you to keep the rest of us posted on your progress since the quest you’re on seems to be a recurring one these days for a number of people. I will now let you and Alan see what gives and get myself out of the way.
I’m sure you know this, but you can check the answer to Alan’s question about the filetypes you downloaded by simply looking in Windows Explorer for the complete file name, including the three-character extension.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 13, 2007 at 9:42 pm #1079472If you need very specific/technical help, or have to deal with confidential information, it’s OK to discuss this with another Lounger in private. But we do hope you’ll post the eventual outcome in the forums, so that others know about it.
Here’s one more lesson for you: if you want to include a link to another post on Woody’s Lounge in a post or reply, you can do it like this:
– Type [post#=
– Type the post number, e.g. 635016 (without a comma in the middle)
– Type ]
– It should now look like this: [post#=635016]
– When you click the Post It button, it will be converted to a clickable link: post 635016If you want to experiment, you can do so in the Test Area – all posts there are just for testing purposes.
Good luck! -

AskWoody LoungerNovember 10, 2007 at 8:18 pm #1083242Discussing this subject with another lounger privately I had cause to refer to post 670.707 to avoid having to explain my quest all over again and noticed that I [inadvertently] had not responded on the open forum at least to Hans’s final post explaining how to refer to a previous post and make it a hyperlink. Thanks Hans, I appreciate every gesture of help you MVP’s and loungers give me as I plod on up this mountain peek in the technological range compatible with the Andes. Due to the frustration I have endured during these past weeks caused by the BackDoor.Flood virus I still have not got round to task of converting downloaded videos so as to burn them to disc but hope to (have a go) as we Brits say, in the near future. In keeping with the counsel offered by more than one lounger I will certainly make my progress known on the lounge for the benefit of any other reader who is on the same mountain- so to speak-. Regards Dave.
