I was recently given a laptop with Windows 98SE installed, but not booting up. The laptop is a Compaq Armada 1750 Notebook PC 6333/T/6400/D/M/3. It was presenting missing and corrupt errors for several system files so rather than fool with it, I did what I thought was an over the top install of Windows 98SE from an old install disk I have. All went as expected until I rebooted the system and found that the drivers for some of the hardware had been changed or removed/weren’t installed. The one that is of most concern is the video driver. The screen resolution is 480X600 and the color is 16 or 2 and there are no other options I know that it previously was 800X600 or 1024X768 with 24 bit color. The only drivers for this system I can find on the internet, don’t seem to work and install some sort of control panel that tells me the settings I want are not supported.

Any ideas or is this one for the trash bin ??

I suppose you are referring to the intuitively-named sp19425.exe on the Compaq website? That’s the only supposed video driver I could find there, also…

That’s the one !!! Problem is that it’s not a driver. It’s a control panel for the video settings. Setting it to the desired resolution and color display gets you the error that the system does not support the configuration, but you can’t get back into the control panel to change anything. shrug I removed it. hmmn

I suppose you’ve also found on various BBSes that this (and several other!) Compaq laptop video drivers are regarded as extremely messy to play with. It may well have to be a bin-job, as you indicate.

I hadn’t found that mentioned anywhere, but I’m realizing it on my own. The thing is a nightmare !!!

I have no information on the hardware configuration and most of the listings in Device Manager show generic MS drivers running the show. In attempting to get the correct combination of devices and drivers, I’ve managed to pick a couple combinations that allow me to change the screen resolution to 800×600 or 1024×768 and the colors to 256 or 16 bit, but even with the system set to change these setting without a restart, every time I make the changes it refuses to do the deed without a restart and reverts to the old setting when it reboots. I fooled with it for a few hours yesterday and finally got frustrated and put it away. I’ll keep looking for answers for a little while, but I’m not holding out a great deal of hope at this point.

            Thanks for your interest John.

Don’t give up yet. Try asking for pointers over at MSFN’s Win 9x board.

I have an Armada upstairs gathering dust (along with a Commodore 64). I have an S3 driver file for it.

      SP06850 – “Compaq DDrawII/III Version 2.31.34 – S3 Windows 95 Driver – 04/15/98” is what the documentation says.

I’ve got some other stuff for it too. Let me know if you want to try it.

I take it you have tried all the software here?

Thanks all, but I donated the machine back in March.
