Is anyone aware of an application which will capture a video such as Youtube into a file which can be stored on a hard drive and subsequently played on Windows Media Player?

Patch reliability is unclear, but widespread attacks make patching prudent. Go ahead and patch, but watch out for potential problems. |

I know Firefox has an add-on that allows you to do this. I am not sure of the name of it at this present point in time, but have used it to capture a video from youtube and it works really well.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 3, 2009 at 4:00 am #1187860I use the Download Helper add-on in Firefox and then Format Factory to convert it to the format that I want. You can use the built-in coverter in Download Helper but that puts a watermark on the video unless you pay for it whereas Format Factory is free! If find that it works really well!

AskWoody LoungerDecember 3, 2009 at 9:04 am #1188020FYI – If you ever want to keep a copy of a video and there is not a convenient tool available to download and save it , then try this if you’re using Internet Explorer. Go to Tools > Internet Options > in “Browser History” click on ‘settings’ > then click the ‘view files’ button and there you should find the video file in whatever format like .flv , .wmv, .mov, etc. Now right click on the name of the file, select ‘copy’ then past it into a folder on your hard drive like “My Videos”. There are free video players that will play just about any video file you save – I find having a couple video players is easier than actually converting the video file. For example, the .flv files you get on YouTube will not play in Windows Media Player but will on the free Moyea FLPlayer. I find this method useful when I see video clips on say a newspaper site for example. There are rare occasions when this method will not work because the video is streamed and protected.
One final tip – when you are in the list of files you’ll find tons of files so click the tab labeled ‘size’ and then the files will be displayed in decreasing sizes. You’ll find the video files to be at the top because they are the biggest.
Sorry about being so verbose.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 5, 2009 at 11:23 pm #1189277I also use and recommend Downloadhelper.
The most complete free video file format converter is Super (C). The only downside to Super (C) is that they have an incredibly obtuse system that forces you to hunt through three pages (all packed with ads for a competing commercial product) before you actually get to the download link. But it’s worth it; I’ve used it a lot and it’s very good.
