I have a 10 year old Vizio tv that works just fine, but uses WMP to stream across my network.  Recently I’ve had a need to convert MP4 files to AVI so they can be streamed to the tv (another limit of old equipment, no MP4 stream capability).  However, any conversion tool I’ve found doesn’t have the ability to set a ‘max file size’ on the converted AVI file to assure it will be ‘streamable’ across the network.  Is there any conversion tool that anyone knows of that can take either an MP4 or MKV video file and convert it to AVI with a max size setting of 2GB?  Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Thank you in advance,

    d

I have not used this app in a while, but I have used it to shrink dual layer video DVDs (~4GB) to one layer DVDs (~2GB) and it has an MP4 to AVI conversion. Don’t think you can actually set a 2GB limit but the compression adjustments will let you reach that goal. It’s free (aka has ads), but worth to check it out.

The best and free tool for video conversion is Handbrake.

‘max file size’ doesn’t influence network streaming.

      Here’s an idea worth consideration.

I don’t have any kind of fancy set-up on either of my two older Asus laptops. My TV isn’t exactly state of the art either. I purposely bought it because it isn’t “smart.” Just a simple old Sharp 32 inch flatscreen of sorts.

I run an hdmi cable from the older of my laptops to my TV and stream or watch locally stored videos whenever I want with little to no playback issues.

When I play locally stored videos I use VLC portable which plays any file type.

Been running like this for over ten years. Perhaps this method will work for you or inspire you to try something similar. Good luck.

I setup my brother with similar setting :
10 years old PC with Intel 3xxx CPU, Nvidia 3xx GPU and Samsung display connected with HDMI to a 4K TV (set as secondary mirror display).
Using VLC and displaying video on both display and TV.

Just use Serviio.  It’s a dnla server, it can transcode your video for the tv on the fly.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions.  For now, I’ll check out Serviio, and in the meantime, use an HDMI direct connection.  Again, thanks to all.

      best regards,
