    Running Windows 2000 Professional.

I am experiencing sluggish Word performance on a fairly regular basis.

It usually happens when I have 2 or more sizeable Word documents open.

Performance slows to a crawl. Almost seems like the program completely hangs, but it doesn’t. There is a delayed reaction of 10-15 seconds or more between a command and the response to the command.

It seems that if I have the patience to close all open Word sessions, then re-open, the problem goes away. Re-booting helps, of course, but sometimes the problem re-occurs within an hour or two.

Sometimes I can run several Word sessions with no problem at all.

I regularly run AdAware and Sppybot S&D, as well as Ewido to check and remove spyware, etc.

    Any help would be appreciated…

How much memory does your PC have, physical (RAM) and virtual?

      • #986726

        512 megs

        and

768 megs virtual (“total paging file size all drives”)

That should be plenty. Do you happen to have Norton (or Symantec) Anti-Virus?

            No…CA (eTrust)
also MS antispyware is usually in the B/G

In that case, I don’t know. You can try Phil Rabichow’s Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000), perhaps that will enable you to find the culprit.

For LONG documents, I have two tips:

              1. try switching to Normal view (if you’re not already using that view)

              2. are you opening documents stored on a network drive instead of on your local C drive? If so, you could copy them down before working on them, or you can try this setting: Tools, Options, Save, check “Make a local copy of files stored on network or removable drives.” (if you have document management software, then most likely this isn’t necessary)
