Hi–

I’m trying to get fancy, now. Danger. I used a vertical label in XP. How do I change the direction of the text?

Here’s what it says in the help:
You can specify how vertical text will be displayed, edited, or printed in the control by setting the Vertical property. If set to Yes, the starting point for inputting text is the upper right corner of the control (the ending point is the lower left corner of the control). If using full pitch characters, the display and print directions are the same as the control for horizontal text. If using half pitch characters, it shifts 90 degrees to the right. The cursor is also rotated 90 degrees to the right in a vertical text control.

What is a half pitch character? Anyone know?

The only thing I could find was an obscure reference where full-pitch meant the double-byte characters such as you find in Kanji, Katakana and other languages, while half-pitch referred to the more or less standard ANSI set of characters that only takes a single byte. I have no idea whether that’s what the 2002 helps means or not.

Hmmm. I’m going to interpret that as meaning you can’t do vertical text rotation unless you speak some (for me) obscure foreign language.

Well, you can do vertical labels OK, but they run from the top right only as long as you are using a European based language. But you can’t run it from the bottom left, which apps like Excel and Word allow you to do. Not sure what imposes that constraint other than the developers, but . . . they do let you do the same thing with text boxes too – now that’s scary!

the quick and dirty way that i use is to simply rotate the label in excel the copy and paste the cell in access, hope that this helps.

I _SO_ totally wish I could use third party stuff….

unfortunately I work for the government, and they insist on controlling me. I’m not even allowed to defrag my own PC, so installing a 3rd party control is way out of the question.

It’s okay, they’ll live without the vertical text until I can find some way of doing it myself.

You may have the wrong idea about Stephan Lebans stuff. Take a look at http://www.lebans.com/rotatetext.htm%5B/url%5D He has a couple of sample databases that rotate text and. They don’t require 3rd party controls. The only things you would be using are objects that are already built into Access (like the image control) and Windows API calls, which he’s already written for you. His samples are written in Access 97, so you have to convert them when you open them in a later version, but they work, and you can learn a lot from them.

Thanks–again–Charlotte! I’m sorry that I dismissed this example, it is really cool.

I was more focused on the label that Access 2002 provides, because you’d think that if they’re going to provide the ability to have a vertical label, then it’d be flexible enough to provide a way to move the text around in it.
