Howdy gang,

VBA continues to remain one of the great mysteries of life. I have never programmed code before and everything I read about VBA, everything response I receive re: a VBA question, EVERYTHING about VBA leaves me completely in the dark.

So help me out good people and reccommend a book that explains VBA and how to use it so a 4th grader could understand. I really want to take advantage of VBA functionality in my A2K DB, but without something easy to understand, I’m lost. This is especially troubling because I’m usually in front of the curve with applications and how to use them.

Don’t look for a VBA book to help you with Access VBA. Look for a good Access book instead. The principles of VBA are the same, but the objects are so different, that a book that focuses on VB, Excel, Word, etc., won’t be a lot of help using Access.

There are a bunch of books on Access development that might be of use to you, but if you’re truly a beginner, they might also overwhelm you. In that case, there’s always VBA for Dummies.

The “bible” of Access is the Access 2000 Developer’s Handbook (2 vols) from Sybex. That one is intermediate to advanced, but I still think you need it on your bookshelf. Otherwise, Access 2000 Unleashed isn’t bad, and Mastering Access 2000 might also suit your needs.

If you post the question on the Access forum, you’ll get more answers from the Access crowd. We all tend to specialize, since it’s impossible to spend enough time in all the forums and still earn a living.

The last “Booger” that I knew was a math wiz in my 9th-grade Latin class (as well as numerous others) in the late 60’s.

I guess that before you try to learn VBA, make sure that you learn the application thoroughly. I think that your app is Access in which case, you’ll want to learn a bit about database theory as well.

Check out http://www.beginners.co.uk, and in particular this page on VBA for Access 97.

It’s a good site for learning all sorts of things.

I can’t tell you though whethere VBA for Access differs very much from 97 to 2000. In Excel and Word, there’s very little difference.

Microsoft Press’ “Step by Step” series tend to be good introductions – if they have a title for Access VBA, that might be a good one to look at.

I found Beginning Access 2000 VBA from Wrox Press to be a well-written book for learning VBA with a specific eye towards Access. I’ve had two employees make their way through the book to great effect.

That said, I’m of the opinion that nothing beats a good instructor led course; see if you can get your employer to pony up the cash!
