Is there a good article anywhere on controlling graphics in tables? Are there known problems with this?

The company I am working for insists on using Information Mapping which uses tables to layout each page. In the past, I’ve always used linked graphics in line in simple text paragraphs and never had trouble.

What I am trying to do here is use a few icons to draw attention to various actions. These “icons” are in text boxes that are formatted as “in-line”. But they keep vanishing whenever I drag one onto a table cell.
Is it possible to control graphic text boxes when in a table or do I have to convert each icon into an individual .png file and then link to it?
Is this known behaviour like the known problems with floating graphics?
Any help or references will be appreciated.

I don’t have problems dragging an in-line text box into a table. Could you attach a small sample document? Replace text with dummy text if necessary.
