I use Acronis True Image 2017 to create weekly whole disk images of several systems running Windows 10 21H1.  The images are made on external USB HDDs.  If I buy a newer version of Acronis True Image, will it be able to restore using any of the many backups I have made using my current version?

(I’ve not posted a question on Ask Woody before.  I may not be posting it in the right place.)

I am using Acronis 2019 and won’t ever upgrade to 2020, 2021, 2022.. unless Acronis remove the new anti-malware build into version 2021 and restore file type from .tibx to .tib.

any of the many backups I have made using my current version?

Why would you want to restore weeks old whole disk image ?
I create a new full image every 2 weeks (1, 16 on the month) and daily incremental backups in between.
I delete the previous month old full image as I have no use for it.

Yes. New version will restore .tib image backups.

I have done so many times. Sometimes for testing and once years ago because a program we use did a couple updates that caused issues for us. Unfortunately we didn’t notice the issue for about 6mos because we didn’t often use that feature. Was nice to be able to go back and verify, then rebuild the data needed.

I think the question is more about backwards compatibility then about restoring image from last year 😉

Hmmm. My original attempt to reply vanished, so will try here again.

There is an Acronis Knowledge Base entry 1689: Backup archive compatibility across different product versions.

That said, I personally would not rely on any of that as an absolute guarantee.

If you have created a Bootable Rescue Media to either CD or to USB flash drive using your Acronis True Image 2017, then that should be the most reliable way to restore from an image created with the Acronis True Image 2017 software.

I would be most (only?) comfortable using the same version to restore as was used to create the image.

The Bootable Rescue Media can be used to restore entire disks or select partitions. Not sure if it allows for restore of individual files or folders. You could try that out if you need that granularity.

As far as I know, what the Bootable Rescue Media does not give you is the ability to mount an image and operate on that without the formal restore.

You don’t need the Bootable Rescue Media to restore files. Just click on the image file and copy any directory, file.. you want.

If I buy a newer version of Acronis True Image

I see no reason to upgrade a program that is doing everything I need it to do, unless there are security flaws that need to be fixed.

      Option 1: do nothing

      cheers, Paul

Hello, I still use the Acronis True image 2017 today.
I still have the origina DLC bootable flash drive.

if the 2017 product works for you, I think there is no need to upgrade. Your question was:

If I buy a newer version of Acronis True Image, will it be able to restore using any of the many backups I have made using my current version?

      The answer is YES

Acronis hogging the system with their anti-virus protection was bad enough but switching from .tib to .tibx (and that stupid calendar when restoring) is the ultimate nail in the coffin for me and like someone else said…….The 2019 version is the last version of True Image I’ll ever use as Acronis has ruined True Image forever.

Not intending to hijack the thread, but Macrium Reflect is worth taking a look at. 🙂

Over the past 20 years I have used PowerQuest Drive Image, Norton Ghost, Acronis, Microsoft Windows 7 Image, CloneZilla, and Macrium. I am liking Macrium the best so far!
