User Accounts (XP)

Hi!
I have several XP machines on my NT 4 network. Now, its my understanding that because these machines are logging into a domain, they don’t need local user accounts. Even if you create one its bypassed as XP looks to the domain. BUT….I have an application that simply refuses to load if the user does not have a user account w/power user rights on that machine. Why???

I don’t guess I really know the answer except that I don’t think we can “blame” it on XP. It’s doing what it’s supposed to, I think. You didn’t say what the app is and maybe it’s better if you don’t, but I’ve also run into a well known application that has the same problem. I’d guess it’s omission in proper programming on the part of the applications. I just got finished setting up my first attempt at an XP machine on the domain at work and this ONE program was the only one I had a problem with. Our “network guru” finally told me to do what you did and the app installed just fine. Don’t ever have that kinda problem installing XP on workgroup machines as opposed to domains! Since ALL our other software, like Office, PSP, Homesite, and on and on, did OK, I’d say it has to be an individual app.

Kris, some problem with the app. You can add a network account to the power user group on the local machine. That may take care of the problem so you don’t have to have a local account. You probably need admin rights to do this. Right click My computer. Select Manage. Open local users and groups. Click on groups. Double click power users. Then click the Add button. Then click the advanced button. Then click the find now button. Select the user or users you wish to add. Ok your way out. Re-boot the machine and try the application with the domain login you added.
