    When I restart Vista, a user account control window pops up that looks like this:

    Windows Firewall
    Microsoft Windows
    {E2B3C97F-6AE1-41AC-817A-F6F921-66D7DD}

    I have the windows firewall turned off since I use Norton IS. There is apparently no way to get more detailed information about this so one is forced to choose “Continue” or “Cancel”.

    Can anyone tell me what this obscure message is for?

    Thanks,

      You should not turn the firewall off manually. It provides protection until NIS is loaded and operational. As long as you are using a version of NIS that Symantec says is Vista compatible then NIS should turn off the Windows firewall.

        Thanks, Joe.

        I turned WIN FW off and rebooted, err restarted. NIS 2008 states that it’s Vista compatible and yet I have two active FWs. I actually expected NIS to complain that WIN FW was turned ON but it didn’t. So now I’m back to turning the WIN FW off manually and for a brief moment in time incurring the risk of intrusion before the NIS is active. I’ve attached what Vista tells me the status of the WIN FW is.

          Could be the mechanism is different under Vista than XP. But as long as NIS2008 is Vista compatible you shouldn’t have to mess with the Vista firewall settings. NIS should take care of all that. I don’t use NIS so I have no idea of how it interfaces with Vista.
